Two Baby Crib Recalls Issued by U.S. CPSC

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced two different baby crib recalls on the grounds that the manufacturers failed to meet Federal safety standards for cribs and children could be able to crawl over the railing and fall. The recalls impact nearly 2,000 cribs sold between March 2006 and March 2008.

The first recall involves cribs manufactured by Mother Hubbard’s Cupboards, which is based in Toronto, Canada. The recalled cribs contain a date code between 0306 and 0308 printed on a label located on the bottom inside of the right side. The cribs were sold for between $500 and $650, and include the following models of wooden full-size cribs:

  • “Enchantment” (model #210)
  • “Hush a Bye” (model #215)
  • “Once Upon A Time” (model #320)
  • “Rock a Bye” (model #1900-350)

The other recall involves Davenport Cribs manufacted by Baby Appleseed, of City of Industry, California. The Davenport crib recall includes models with two mattress support systems, one metal and the other wooden. They contain a label on the right side of the lower inner panel of the crib with model numbers 273-xxxx-xxxx and manufacture dates on or before August 2007.

Owners of the Mother Hubbard’s Cupboards cribs have been advised to stop using the cribs immediately and to contact the manufacturer at (888) 661-8201 for instructions on how to re-install the support brackets to eliminate the hazard.

Owners of the Davenport cribs can contact Baby Appleseed at (877) 348-2199 to request a repair kit that should be available in the middle of this month. Owners have been advised to stop using the recalled crib if they have it in the lowest position, which uses the wooden mattress support. Those with younger babies who have the crib in the top or middle positions with the metal mattress support can continue using the crib while they wait for their repair kit.

The U.S. CPSC closely monitors the safey of baby cribs due to the substantial danger defective cribs can pose to babies and toddlers. In June 2008, a Babies R Us crib recall was issued for over 320,000 Jardine cribs were recalled after at least 42 incidents were reports where crib slats and spindles broke, which could pose a risk of entrapment or strangulation for infants.
