Toys R Us Step2 Plastic Swing Set Recall: Swing Can Break

A recall has been issued for approximately 4,300 plastic swing sets sold by Toys “R” Us throughout the United States, as hangers that support the swings could break, causing a child to fall and sustain personal injury.

The Toys R Us swing set recall was issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on May 27, 2009, in cooperation with the Step2 Company LLC, which makes the Step2 Play Up Gym play sets. The play sets were sold exclusively at Toys “R” Us stores between January 2009 and April 2009 for about $400.

At least 17 reports have been received of broken hangers, which attach the swings’ ropes to a bar that goes across the top of the play set. While the swing sets are made in the U.S., the hangers themselves are made in China. Step2 said there have been no injuries reported in connection to the faulty hangers.

The recalled Step2 swing sets include a platform, climber, slide, two swings and have a red “Step2” logo plate attached to the front. The affected play sets have a model number of 797300. Play sets that have hangers with white plastic bushings are not affected by the recall.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the play sets, and to contact Step 2 at 1-800-347-8372 to receive replacement hangers. The CPSC also asks that anyone with an incident, injury or a different hazard involving this play set to report the incident.
