OVERVIEW: Prolia (denosumab) was first introduced in 2010, as a treatment for osteoporosis. It was also the first drug every approved by the FDA specifically to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis. However, early on it was linked to an increased risk of bone fractures.

According to the consumer group Public Citizen, there were concerns over Prolia side effects dating back to at least 2009; a year before it was even approved to be sold.

In 2012, Health Canada and Amgen released a Prolia bone fracture warning letter, which was designed to alert Canadian users to an increased risk of atypical femur fractures that may occur with little or no trauma to the thigh bone; the thickest, largest, and purportedly strongest, bone in the human body.

Similar warnings were placed on Prolia sold in Europe. However, Amgen has decided U.S. consumers of Prolia do not warrant the same consideration or label warnings, despite the fact it is the same drug being sold in the U.S. as is being sold in Canada and Europe…just without those same warnings about the risks of bone fractures.

In 2013, the consumer watchdog Public Citizen added Prolia to its list of pills consumers should avoid, placing the drug on its “Do Not Use” list. Public Citizen noted that not only did Prolia triple the risk of hip fractures, femur fractures and other bone problems, but there were also concerns over infections and dermatologic adverse events.

In April 2019, Public Citizen petitioned the FDA to add a black box warning to Prolia over the risk of bone fractures. It is the most stringent label warning the agency can require a drug to carry.

What about Prolia causing Aplastic Anemia? Looks like there have been tests where it caused it. My Mom got it and was on Prolia for 5 years and dies within a few months of coming down with Aplastic Anemia. I’m sure it was caused by the Prolia

I am an 80 year old woman who on Sept. 23, 2024 tripped and fell in my home resulting in an Atypical broken left femur. I was on PROLIA since 2015. My surgeon told me to get in touch with my PC doctor after he put a titanium rod in my leg. This takes a year to heal. I was on face time with her and she was astonished to see I was on PROLIA for 10 years. Clasped her hands over her chest and was saying “this is all on me” twice near tears. She told me I was on it too long. She apologized for the error. In MY chart she write “This is quite long and I am SURE that this caused the Atypical fracture” of which I have copies of. Now I am experiencing same stress pain in right leg. I have been an active 80 year old with my gardening and dancing. All of which has ceased. I would never recommend anyone to take PROLIA. I was referred to get in touch with an endocrinologist who wanted me to go on another drug Evinity. I refused and am currently being helped by a Holistic Nutritionist taking many daily supplements for my bones.

I’ve been on prolia 3 years After 2yrs arch on right foot collapsed 6 months later after the shot the other arch collapsed plus extreme pain. That was Feb 2024 now 5 fractured vertebrae in back . Living in much pain trying to find help

I started the Prolia injection January 2023 it was recommended by my doctor that I take it, my DEXA SCAN showed that my osteoporosis was progressively worse, I have arthritis in my lower back and hips and have been getting epidural steroid injections for the pain. After starting the Prolia I’m experiencing severe pain in back, legs, and feet. My pain is so severe that I had to resign from my job of 30 years due to the excruciating pain. I have always been a very active person until I started the Prolia and now it’s difficult for me to stand or walk the pain is debilitating, I also have dental problems, I had a tooth extracted due to bone loss, never had any dental issues before starting the Prolia. I also started experiencing severe headaches and abdominal pain, None of these symptoms started until I started the Prolia. I’m no longer able to work due to my severe pain, I wish that I was informed about the side effects of this medication it’s the worst decision I have ever made and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone

Prolia is killing my body.I lost all my jaw bones lost all muscle mass went from a size 9 to a 3 in less than 3 weeks.Headaches body hurts every where.Vision is blurry every day I am declining. I’m sole care giver of my husband that has dementia and I’m not going to be able to do that much longer.Why did no one tell me about any side effects?????My family doctor didn’t tell me and I asled.Prolia has robbed me of my life as I once knew it.I was not going to file a suit against them but my gosh they need to pay for all this pain and suffering they have caused me and my family.

Prolia injection was added to my list of medications due to steroid induced Osteoporosis. I started Prolia in 2022. I had to have a tooth extracted in January of 2024 and that is when the nightmare started. I was in major pain and my jawbone became exposed. I was diagnosed with osteomyelitis. I no longer had blood flowing at the bottom and all teeth were loose and had to be extracted. Due to bone exposure, skin graphs were taken from my jaws to cover the bone after major debridement. As of today, I still have nerve pain. I’m still waiting to see what can be done to get removable dentures or implants since so much bone loss. I was told that this doesn’t happen to everyone who takes Prolia.

I took the prolia this year.Match 8.Been sick since Walk up with horrendous pain , muscles and joints, fever, itchy throat that went into fill allergic bronchitis.Given an antibiotic and reacted to that too.I took benadryl in the mornings and mu levocitirizine in the evenings, budesonude inhaler and pulmocare.I was very active before this bloody medicine and now, have all these and heart palpitations.My Dr said it is not prolia, bloody he’ll it is NOT.I am consulting my pulmonologist and allergy Dr.

I received the Prolia injection in February 2024. After getting bronchitis a couple weeks later I then started having pain in legs and hips. I have been on crutches for over two months now. Pain varies from my hips, groins, to thighs, knee, and shins. Sometimes it’s a sharp pain and other times it’s a burning or aching. I have had to take pain meds routinely. I spend most of time in recliner with heating pad or laying down with pillows. I received hip injections last week and that was first time I have been able to sleep on my left hip since this all started. I have urinary frequency anyway but now I have to use incontinence pads because I can’t make it to bathroom. It’s been very upsetting and extremely debilitating. I still work part time but have found that now I am only able to work a few hours a day or I have swelling of ankles and extreme pain with walking. Some days I am unable to even make it to work because of the pain. Taking the Prolia shot was perhaps the worst decision I’ve ever made!

I took one shot the next morning I had intense pain in my groin area on the left side, deep muscle pain in my left hip, eventually the pain spread to the back of my left leg. My Dr did a bone scan and said I needed this medication to strengthen my bones, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis in 2016, I was told by several people this medicine is not for people’s with Rheumatoid arthritis. It has and continues to be terrible side effects.

I just had Prophylactic Nailing left femur surgery on May 17, 2024. According to the doctors it was bone demineralization and stress fracture due to Prolia injections that I have been getting for many years. It was found when a Dexa scan was done on my thigh, (the very first time my thigh was scanned). I have fractured my feet 5 times and had lots of bone pain over the years. I am now trying to recover from the surgery. It is so difficult at my age. If you need more information, I will be happy to provide it.

Response to Jewel, please join the Facebook group Prolia (Denosumab) side effects support group. If you just stop taking Prolia injections without going onto another bone density drug, you risk having multiple vertebrae fractures that can happen as soon your next injection was due. This is called rebound. Your bones quickly start losing cells and the numbers accelerate. The rebound lasts up to 30 months. Please join the group and read up so you can intelligently talk with your doctor. Best of luck! Prolia is a nasty drug that leaves women worse off than when they started it.

I was on Prolia for 3 years. Then my dental implant fell out an it was evident that I had necrosis of the jaw. In November 2023 I had a fracture of L 1. I have red severe osteoporosis of the spine and hip.

Can someone PLEASE HELP & give me advice?? My mom has always been active in 70’s walking 3 miles daily and got around GREAT but diagnosed w/ Osteoporosis. She still kept walking fine & was just careful. Her doc convinced her to get the prolia shot and hasn’t been able to function or even get out of chair hardly. She can’t get out of bathtub without struggling for awhile. She’s in soooo much constant pain & hasn’t slept hardly any in 3 months. THIS IS NOT HER! She always had perfect health (nothing broken, no surgery, nothing) & this shot has destroyed her. Terrible joint pain & she can’t even function. Heavy chest/panic attacks, It’s ruining her life. The pain doesn’t even ease up in her body. She can barely get in/out of bed. She was sooo strong before this shot! Doc said other patients had success with it and it couldn’t be the shot 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Now I found about 100 horrible reviews online like this but couple years old & no one answered me. Her office called and cancelled her next appointment because they said her doc left the state & they can’t get new one in for her that day & will call back when they can get her in! That was weeks ago. We call & call to see if any updates/cancellation but nothing.. We live in WV so not many docs here & all seem clueless. Can anyone PLEASE help her & advise what to do? Pain pills aren’t helping & she’s going to destroy her stomach w/ them, she’s in so much pain. She shakes all over, Hospitals send her home. The doc says try something new but she goes home & NOTHING HELPS. We have no docs here who have any understanding of this. PLEASE tell me how to help her. She’s in constant misery & she’s toughest person I know. I’ve never seen her sick until now 😫🙏❤️ she’s in 70’s—how much longer will she hurt? It’s been weeks. Prob 3 miserable months. I too was extremely active and was told after a dexascan that I had osteopenia and was told that I needed to take Prolia in 2023.I got my second shot in November 2023 and I plan on stopping it! I get short breath when I try to do the exercises I once did. If I continue the exercise I have excruciating pain in groin and back . I can’t believe how fast my body did a decline . I had to wear a boot after not being able to walk . After a few days I was back to walking . When trying to walk again , I had groin pain, hip pain , bad sinus issues , bedridden for a month! It is unbelievable!!! I intend to stop because .. I see nothing positive with this drug . I often wonder if this drug is for older adults only to shorten their lifespan!!! Not having a productive quality of life !!! Unbelievable!!!

I posted on page 12 in 2021. Whilst waiting for Prolia to be injected I had the time to read enough reviews that changed my mind. I informed my doctor what I had discovered. I decided to go with the products recommended by others on this website. Three years later I have come back to say that I had a new bone density test and my osteoporosis has improved 2%. I can’t believe this drug is still being sold. “Vitamin D and Caltrate alone is not enough to fight osteoporosis. To absorb these products effectively bones also needs Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Magnesium and Collagen.” COLLAGEN IS THE STEEL FRAME CALCIUM IS THE CEMENT.

My mother was given Prolia and has had pain and swelling in her jaw. The bone is deteriorating. It is ongoing with many procedures and monitoring by an Oral surgeon and a periodontist. This is a known side effect of this drug and not worth any potential benefit my mother has no other health issues but is now in constant pain and always has appointments with her oral surgeon as he removes deterioration of her jaw This drug is marketed to older people and i feel strongly that the risks outweigh the benefits

I took one shot of prolia in November 2023. Several weeks later, I started to experience extreme fatigue accompanying with bone/joint/muscle pain. So, I went back to my G.P. to let him know of my symptoms but he didn’t believe it was the side effects of prolia. His office did some lab work and it was negative for arthritis .Before the shot,I was never informed of any side effects or received any kind of instructions/teaching. I thought I can trust our health care system. On the day of the result on the Dexa scan ,I received a call from the doctor’s nurse that I need prolia injection for my osteoporosis and she is going to arrange me to have the injection at a different clinic. So, sometime after that, I received the shot. Now, I am suffering from constant aches and pains including daily headaches. I used to walk 1-2 miles a day but no longer now.(having groin pains). I also suffer from insomnia due to hip,back, pelvic and leg pains .I am a healthy 71 year-old without any comorbidities and don’t take any medications. How on earth is prolia still in the market? And how are some doctors continue to do us harm? Please follow up with me. I need answers.

My mother’s doctor recommended Prolia after her bone density showed osteopenia. She was 82, in good shape, walking everyday without help, and even some low level hiking. Immediately after the injection she experienced pain across her hips and in her left arm. I determined not to have her get a second shot. Five years later she has extreme osteonecrosis in right hip and deterioration in neck cervical. She can barely walk with a cane, has constant pain in hip and, numbness/pain in her left hand that doctors say is a result of neck issues. This once vibrant and active woman is now completely crippled and suffering from constant pain.

I started Prolia injections five years ago due to dex scan indicating osteoporosis. Prolia was recommended by my physician as oral medication Fosamax and Bosnia were not effective. I am a RN and read information about Prolia and didn’t see any adverse effects of necrosis of the jaw. Amgen should be responsible for this irreversible damage. I have had severe jaw pain that progressed to demineralization of my jaw causing me to have severe dental issues. Dentist said he had never seen such adverse effects, have had a loss of 6 teeth and what is left is either chipped or turning dark in color. I am at a loss of what my options are. This has caused me discomfort and extreme embarrassment of bad and missing teeth, don’t smile and hide my mouth when I laugh. I’ve been advised not to stop injections as it might cause fractures. What a bunch of bull shit. I feel I deserve some type of settlement so I can afford dental implants. Pharmacological company’s should take responsibility and pay for problems their drug causes. Prolix has been on the market for about 10 years. I don’t believe I’m the only person having these issues, after reading some of the testimonials several have had dental problems. Amgen failed to inform physicians and the public that problems were occurring. Still nothing was done to stop production as it was such a money-maker. Prolia injections are around 2 thousands dollars each and recommended 2 times yearly. I would certainly like you to consider my case in a lawsuit.

I took my first injection of Prolia in April 2021, I had severe bone pain immediately and then my Achilles tendons started hurting. I tested and all but the Achilles tendons became better. Second injection was in Oct 2021. After the second injection I could barely walk. During the rest of ‘21 I had a horrible rash, urinary retention, severe constipation, thigh pain, joint, muscle and nerve pain. During the of ‘22 o went through dozens of injections and epidurals because I thought my discs were causing the numbness, pain and tingling in my legs. Dec of ‘22 I had my fist back surgery followed by two more in ‘23. Instead of helping everything became worse. In Dec of ‘23 I decided it was time to see a neurologist. I have femoral damage in both legs. I’ve no doubt that this nerve damage as well as all of the other issues I started and continue to have are due to the Prolia! My Rheumatologist just laughs at me when I mention it. My PCP agrees with me and I’ll be bringing it up at my next appointment with the neurologist.

I took four injections of Prolia and had to stop since I had in infection in my implant and it had to be removed. I was put on miacalcin. Several months later I had extreme pain in my back and had a X-ray,MRI and nuclear scan .I found out that I had a compression fracture with six broken bones. I was in extreme pain for two months. I’ve been wearing a brace since.

I have severe osteoporosis had my first injection of Prolia in 2021 and i started not sleeping and if I eat I vomited up blood I also had brain fog and depression a spent 6 weeks in hospital and was admitted to a mental ward where I had 6 rounds of electric shock treatment no one believed me it was from taking the injection a year later a fell over and fractured my t9 vertebral in my spine it was a 25% fracture my lasted bone scan this year shows the t9 is now at 47% so the injection does not work I would love to sue these people

Two years since discontinuing Prolia due to heart and uti issues. Then Forteo but heart issues. Actonel burned esophagus. Last month standing in kitchen, actute pain in back. It was T8 burst fracture. MRI shows burst fractures, wedge fractures, healing fractures, acute khyposis. In a TSLO brace. 68 years old and no other siblings or cousins have taken OP drugs. Have been told spine is “crumbling” So osteoporotic it does not show on X-ray

I had been taking Prolia since 2014 ! I recently found out in both my jaw joints i have a kind of arthritis that most often is caused by Prolia !! Right is severe left is moderate ! Should of been told to do cat scan every couple years . Apparently it is more common then i knew ! I thought it was only for dental work. Very painful and my face swells ! My doctor believes it was caused by the drug ! She had 3 women in one month who had the same problem, all on Prolia ! What are those odds !!!!

Drug companies, doctors and therapists keep pushing drugs instead of fixing root cause and prevention. A healthy diet whole foods, fresh fruits & vegetables and meat and eliminating smoking alcohol sugar and processed food helps most in prevention of diseases. But drug companies and doctors will go out of business. Prolia has destroyed my mobility and my life.

Had first Prolea shot a month ago. Severe back pain, sore throat and severe flu symptoms ever since I got the shot. Can’t walk..Cannot get out of bed….I am suing those bastards…and the hospital. I never saw the reactions this poison has caused. Amen will not give me a deadline about these awful side effects. Oh and diarreah also. There is a better way. Estrogen

Hello… I’ve been on prolia for over a decade now and am just learning about it being taken off the market. But what I am really shocked about is all the side effects we the people were not warned about. I’ve recently lost almost all my teeth. I had a major mouth/bone infection last year that I thought was due to bone pieces after an extraction and I ended up being deathly ill for almost 4 months because my immune system became sooo low with the mouth infection that I caught almost every illness that was floating around between Sept 2022 to December 2022, including Covid being the last illness I caught, and I am only now realizing that this is more than likely due to my long use of prolia. I am sooo upset right now! I need to pass all this information onto my Dr because I’m sure he has no idea why I got sooo sick last year… I am beyond ticked off! I’m supposed to go for another injection this coming Tuesday October 17 2023 but after learning all of this, obviously I will be re-discussing everything that has happened over the last year with my Dr and NOT letting him inject me incase it was all due to the prolia. ** However, I’ve had severe Osteoporosis (with a T-Score that was sooo low that it was lower than the last color on the Bone density chart) since the age of 27 and I will be 63 in 6 days, so what I’d love to know is, is there another alternative bone medication that people are now taking if no longer taking the prolia? ** In the past I’ve taken almost every Osteoporosis medication since the late 80’s including Forteo for 2 years and after the Forteo it was Actonel and then on to the prolia. And since I desperately need to take something for my bones so I don’t end up with another spinal fracture and surgery, I really want to know what I can take next? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Also, are any of you following up with the supposed lawsuit and/or do you know if it is a class action lawsuit? I was using Prolia for 4 years , but I had to stop because of the terrible side effects. As a result , I suffered 7 Spine fractures and now a lot of pain in my thighs and femur . I lost a few teeth. I’m in so much pain and suffering ! I didn’t know about those terrible side effect , not even medical providers told me ! Please , contact me asap . Thank you so much.

I’m 43yo male. 6-7 years ago I had non traumatic t4-7 vertebrae collapse. Earlier this year I had a dexa scan which showed L-1 t-score and z-score and was -4.3 and -4.2. I had my first prolia shot 4 weeks ago. About an hour after I had it I started hurting. By the next day every joint and bone in my body was killing me. I have missed all of my kids sporting events since. I can barley walk. Still in severe pain. I have taken 10-12 motrin since my t4-7 collapsed. The cancer center that gave me the shot told me to continue the motrin and take Claritin??? So I will never take another shot of prolia and will do everything I can to make sure anyone I know doesn’t.

I was diagnosed with early onset osteoporosis in my 40’s. After about 12 years on Fosomax and 4+ on Prolia, I had necrotic bone in my jaw, then two months later I fell and broke my femur. Since Prolia is given at the Dr. office 2x per year, I never saw any warning labels. I seemed to have NO side effects, until I did. The whole thing was so traumatic. The surgeon, who repaired the femur, said that my bone was “spongy”. The attachment at the hip is askew, as it was hard to get a good connection. I continue to have hip and bone pain and spend a lot or money on PT, massages, and Pilates, to keep me as healthy as possible. I’ll never take these drugs again, but I still have osteoporosis.

Back in 2021 my Dr . Recommended prollia for my bones, I took 3 injections .I started with severe hip pain knees, and fatigue and more after 3 rd shot my immune system shut down and some how I touched something and hand to.face I got C-diff after severe bounts of diarrhea for several days with nothing stopping it I lost the ability to walk , my muscles did work went to.ER were I was transport to hospital spent 18.days . It impacted my heart liver kidneys and Gi tract. .CDC doctors all kinds went home on all kinds of meds 7 Mos later spent 8 more days in hospital. Had sever infection in intestines and such more meds . I will never take it again the pain it caused me and money they need to.shut it down.

I have Gerd, IBS, and gluten sensitivity, wt. loss, ? malabsorption and diagnosed with osteoporosis. I could not tolerate Fosamax so I was told to take Prolia on July 25, 2023. I will not be taking this shot again due to the side affects itching, constipation, appetite change, urinary urgency, ? diarrhea, and muscle fatigue.

I have jawbone pain, pain in all joints. I was never told of any side effects. The Endo consult was around 5 minutes and has been each time. Any concerns have been dismissed.

I just stopped taking it. Dr told me I would have broken bones all over. My bones are not that fragile. And I hate Fear Medicine. I have fallen a few times recently, never broken a bone in my life. Recently had a big oral surgery because I had grown a sharp, pointy piece of bone coming out of the side if my gum, under the back bottom tooth. Was a horrible experience. Makes it really hard to eat, the pokey point is trashing my tongue, every time I swallow with or without food, it scraps against it. 😕 Dentist thought he fixed it. Not. I see him this afternoon. Seriously hate going to the dentist….and this crap has been going on since Jan. Told the endocrinologist that I wanted to switch to Fosomax which I took previously with no problems. But drs like to prescribe the new drugs. We get to be an experiment for them. I am no longer willing. The old drugs work better. She tells me it causes the same problems. I don’t believe her. And I do not believe I matter to her at all. It is not about concern for me. I believe when Drs push the new drugs, it is beneficial to them. Not you.

After a routine bone density test my rheumatologist recommended I begin taking Prolia, receiving my first and only injection June 25, 2020. The next day I was sitting on the sofa when I suddenly experienced excruciating pain on the side of my right leg -followed by pain in left hand thumb area – left arm above elbow and in my right knee. From that day to the present 7/22/2023, I have continued to have pain in my bones, joints, muscles coupled with excessive itching overall. Currently experiencing continuing & worsening neuropathy, burning sensations, etc. My hands, legs & feet are painful & weakening; thus my mobility is fast becoming problematic. The sad part is that neither of my long-standing doctors believe Prolia to be the culprit. Last year I developed dental issues – teeth holding bridge fell out – Eye issues, etc. Can only imagine how much better my life would be if Prolia had not entered!

Mother only had 2 injections in 2018. Had to have all top teeth pulled because of necrosis. Dentures don’t fit right because of the bone or tori that is deformed on upper jaw. She now weighs less than 95 pounds and is having oral surgery ( alveoplasty) tomorrow. Suffers from a lot of pain and overwhelming fatigue also. Ulcers have now developed in esophagus and stomach. No lawyer will take her case. Too late to sue doctor because it has been more than 3 years since injections. What about Amgen! ? They should be sued no matter how long it’s been.

I had one injection 10/11/21 and was not warned of the side effects . Two days later my eyes were watering profoundly. Third day ,my blood vessel burst in my eye. My hips were hurting so bad I couldn’t sleep . I was running a temp also. One week later nurse called me in Cipro as by then I had UTI. 11/17/23 I made an online report about Prolia to Medwatch and FDA. My partial won’t fit ,my left side of face sags, my teeth are big problem ! Have trouble swallowing now. I am weak, cant lift a gallon of tea. The Dr wanted me to try a different injection but I gave it thought and decided no more . I will take my chances on brittle bones. My teeth are my big worry and my jawbone as they recently began ! I have told everyone I know not to take this poison drug!

Yes my doctor did not tell me nothing about the shot I’ve had it eight times that’s when my pain started my jaw I got pains in my muscles everywhere stomach my brain cuz I have fibromyalges scoliosis osteoporosis I have a rib disease I’m neuropia I was hitting at 15 blows with a sledgehammer I shouldn’t be taking that and I had a blood clot on my leg before and then he don’t even tell me nothing about it and gives it to me and I’ve been bedridden ever since my whole body hurts I’ve been having a heart rhythm Beats my doctor did not tell me anything about that shot and that’s what’s been wrong with me and I can get a blood clot in my brain and I had no idea there was a lawsuit going on my doctor didn’t tell me nothing about it I am having all kinds of problems someone would like to call me and talk about it please my doctor did not explain nothing to me

When I was unable to tolerate the GERD from oral medications for osteoporosis, my primary care physician set me up with a clinic that gave me Prolia injections without ever telling me about the warnings. It wasn’t until I needed a tooth extracted that couldn’t be saved that I was given the horrendous warnings. I was then watched for dead bone disease and I fear future extractions as I have been unable to get off Prolia because I can’t afford the other injectables and insurance doesn’t cover. I have hip and back pain that make me miserable. I still haven’t been told there is a new medication I can tolerate covered by insurance. I hear it’s called the Prolia Trap. I live in fear of what is happening to my body and of the fact there is a time limit a person is able to take Prolia at all, in spite of the rapid bone loss when you stop.
