Pampers Diaper Rash Reports Lead to Investigation of Dry Max Products

Complaints of severe diaper rash from Pampers “Dry Max” diapers, which are a newer and thinner type of the popular diapers, has sparked a federal investigation into whether problems with the diapers are causing chemical burns on babies.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) began a probe this week after a growing number of parents expressed concern over potential side effects of Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers diapers employing “Dry Max” technology. The new diapers, released in March, are thinner than previous versions.

CPSC officials say they have received a handful of reports from parents who say their children suffered persistent and severe rashes after wearing the diapers, including blisters similar to those caused by chemical burns.

Officials at Proctor & Gamble have dismissed concerns over Pampers problems, calling the claims that the diapers cause severe rashes “completely false.” The company says that the severe Pampers diaper rash complaints are being perpetuated by a small group of parents who are angry at the changes they made to their diapers. The company says the spread of the rumors have been helped by the use of social media.

“We have comprehensively and thoroughly investigated these and other claims and have found no evidence whatsoever that the reported conditions were in any way caused by materials in our product,” said Pampers Vice President Jodi Allen in a press release issued on Thursday. “Independent physicians, highly respected in the field, have analyzed our data and have confirmed our conclusions.”

Allen said Proctor & Gamble has received less than two complaints for every one million diapers sold, which she says is typical for a diaper. Allen said that the company has turned over all of its findings with the CPSC.

The commission is urging parents who have experienced problems to contact them immediately. Parents can contact the CPSC at https://www.cpsc.gov/cgibin/incident.aspx.

My son has to have surgery due to wearing pamper dipers, the doctor has said it is because the matrial from the dipers rubbing up against his penis has caused scare tissue to form and he goes in for surgery next week, i am trying to sew pampers

This is not a RASH, it is a BURN! My son had this for several months with me buying every over the counter cream that I could find to help the incessent itching and crying that my son was doing. He used to love taking baths, but since he had the BURN he won’t even sit down in the tub anymore even after we switched to Huggies and it’s gone. He was miserable for months, and there was nothing that could fix it, until I finally realized after reading some of the stories from other mothers, that it was in fact due to the DRY MAX diapers from Pampers. As soon as I switched with in a couple of days the BURN was cleared up. My poor son had to endure months of this, becauase I too thought it was a rash or maybe even exzema. It wasn’t it was due solely to this Dry Max diaper. Parents DO NOT use this diaper. It will happen to your child, and you don’t want to have to watch them go through the same thing I had to with my son. It’s horrible.

I say pampers is probably right about number of complaints per diaper sold. I say that because people who have heard about the problem don’t buy pampers at all, not to mention the diapers sitting in homes that kids can’t use. I’m to scared to buy any of their diapers even though my daughter loves them. She is in college so we buy all the diapers and I just can’t trust them it is NOTworth the risk. I heard of someone who’s son had the rash/burn so I rushed to let her know and sure enough bought huggies and it went away. She has also aquired a lawyer and is part of a class action suit.

My 9 month old granddaughter and her mom live with me, and since commencing using Pampers Cruisers, my little granddaughter has developed what looks totally like chemical burns on her bottom. My daughter has tried everything she can think of, but to no avail. We have for the last couple of days been putting her in her play pen with lots of towels and a bare bottom to play for as long as she will. This does help; however, as soon as a Pampers goes back on her, it gets worse. I have seen a lot of diaper “rashes” in my lifetime, but nothing like this. It is the worst thing I have ever seen on a small baby, and I find it shameful that Pampers won’t accept the input of good parents. Maybe not all children will have a reaction to this ingredient, but it appears enough are that something should be done. My granddaughter has been lathargic and sleeping way too many hours a day. of course, as soon as we heard about the Pamper crisis, we immediately bought different diapers yesterday and are waiting to see a dramatic improvement. We are hoping this leaves no permanent scars, as the burns were quite extensive and deep.

My daughter is less than week old. Yesterday started using drymax for newborns and this morning she developed rash. She was in hospital and it was charted every 3hrs. Diaper was changed every 3hrs sometimes more. She out of no where has rash within 12hr after 1st use of this diaper. 12hr later its 10x worse. Ive been changing her every 2hrs to keep it dry using creams n its getting worse. I mentioned to friend that its strange and she informed me about the news about new pampers dry max. I looked at some comments. My daughter too screaming painfull cry when she pee and when i change her. Shes newborn but her scream is pain scream. This is redicules. And coincidence i change her diaper to these pampers n sudden rash!!!!!!

My son has had a nasty rash for 2 months. We have been to the doctor 3 times. I have been using nystatin cream, hydrocortisone cream and he was even put on a steroid at one point. Nothing worked! He is now on a new cream. I had recently heard that it may be from the Pampers diapers. I was using Pampers Cruisers with Dry Max when this all started. I immediately switched his diapers to Huggies Little Movers. His rash is still really bad. I feel so bad for him. It itches and burns, he is so uncomfortable! These diapers need to be pulled from the shelves. To say that parents are making this up because they are mad about the diaper change is outrageous!! I’m all for change if it is good, but if there is a problem than they need to fix it. Stop ignoring these claims and do something!

We have been using Pampers since day one, and our daughter is nine months old. We were thrilled to hear about the dry max upgrade. That being said, it makes me incredibly angry that Pampers is saying that these new complaints of rash are “being perpetuated by a small group of parents who are angry at the changes they made to their diapers.” We were not happy when the diapers started leaking constantly (we were changing clothes two to three times a day with the new dry max Pampers), but I didn’t think to link the blister like rash to the new diaper. We tried everything from removing foods, stopped introducing new foods, oodles of diaper rash creams, etc. In addition, we had to try other diapers due to the leaking issue. After about a day in a different diaper the rash started to disappear. But we had leakage issues with other diapers and would go back to Pampers, and surprise, the rash would return. It wasn’t until the third time this happened that I made the link between the two. So we’re pretty pissed off that Pampers is saying it’s a select angry group, because we were all for the new dry max. Huggies leaves strange and creepy gel “crumbs” all over (even with two changes in an hour – I’m not letting her sit in urine at all and it still happens with the Huggies), Luvs are crappy, and the generic brands leak faster than anything. We’re are not thrilled to have to had made the switch to organic diapers that are 11 cents more per diaper after Pampers working for 9 months. This company needs to get off their high horse and fess up to the fact that it isn’t a group upset about the new diapers, but in fact a large group of parents who have seen terrible rashes disappear a day or two after switching brands, and many of us didn’t want to switch brands.

ashley
Something has been changed in the baby wipes to where both of my children have a serve rash to go along with the stomach virus. I have never seen a babies blister when your changing them left and right who have very seldom ever even had a diaper rash. To think I thought I was being smart parent buying the sensitive wipes made by pampers. I haven’t used their diapers in months since my 2nd son seemed to be way to sensitive to their diapers. I have a screaming 2 yr old and 9 month old plus a screaming husband who thinks I am not changing my childrens diapers. I am willing to bet you can walk into every employee’s home and investor of P & G and you won’t find their children have any pamper products !!! I hope selling out the future was worth the money/greed and may God have mercy on their soul. If they will sacrifice innocent babies I wonder what other harmful chemicals are in the rest of their products that are in my house? I won’t buy their products after this issue they should atleast put on their big boy/girl pants and own up to their responsibiltiy.

Karen
My 14 month son starting clawing his butt. I knew he was aggravated so I took him to the doctor in April. He had a severe rash on his butt and front of his stomach. The doctor gave me a prescription for hydrocortisone. I didn’t even think it was the new Dry Max diapers because we have always used Pampers. I switched to Huggies and things are looking better. Go figure!

Tiffany
My 17 month old daughter is like so many of the other babies in the posted comments. I have been an avid Papmper’s user (first Swaddlers and then Cruisers) her whole life. The diapers were great and never posed any problems until they first removed the liner (those leaked overnight) and then went to this Drymax. She NEVER had diaper rash before these Drymax diapers. And like the other reports, It’s much more than diaper rash – burns is more accurate. She, too, had blood curdling screaming and crying episodes like I was torturing her when I would change her diaper or put her in the tub. No matter how much ointment was used it would not clear up at all. I believe that she will even have a few scars from her deeply embedded sores. It is totally unacceptable for a company to continue to maket these diapers and not to heed so many complaints from their customers. Pamper’s were the best diaper on the market (at least for my daughter) before this. When they still had liners they were soft (not stiff like cardboard), they didn’t leak, they didn’t sag to their knees (which makes then leak) and most certainly didn’t burn our children. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it (or ruin it in this case!!) Why change what works. Money, I guess.

Dawn
My son is 14 months old and yesteday we noticed a horrible rash on his bottom when we changed him. We thought it was something he ate during the day yesterday until we realized that we had just started using the new Pampers we bought last weekend. His poor bottom is so red and started bleeding today. We’ve changed back to Huggies and won’t be back. The most awful thing a parent can feel is helplessness when your child is in pain. Not to mention I bought two cases at Sam’s for almost $80! Now I have to toss all of them out. We tried to call Pampers to ask what we should do and there isn’t an option to talk to anyone…it just disconects.

Shavvon
My daugher is 14 months and I was so excited to try the new Pamplers Dry Max. I’d gotten a really great deal at CVS (extra bucks), so I bought two boxes. One for the baby sitter and one for the my house. The second of using them her bottom was bright red. I tried all types of diaper rash creams, even my trusty cure all Triple Paste Ointment. So I thought it was a yeast infection since it wasn’t clearing, so I then tried a prescription her doctor had given her. Poor thing screamed becuase it burned so bad, so I crossed a yeast infection. The only of thing I could think of were the new diapers. So after her bath I put her in one of her brother’s size 5 huggies (way too big) frosted her cupcake (as her doctor calls it) with the triple paste ointment..and this morning she was perfectly fine. Is so sad that this diaper has hit the shelve and our little ones have to suffer. I hope they are removed immediately!!

Karen
My daughter has developed an uncontrollable itch that she scratches so hard that she makes herself bleed. The rash is along the elastic line of the diapers. This has developed over the past few months and we have also always been loyal pampers users. In fact, I just bought a case two days ago, I’m returning it in the morning! Anyone else have a similar experience with uncontrollable itching?

Crystal
OK! I fully believe that these diapers are causing the rashes… I have had trouble before with Pampers, the scent in them caused both my children to have irritated diaper areas! BUT to those of you who tried switching diets and creams and wipes… WTF? The diaper is the closest thing to your child beside their clothing, so why would you not switch the diapers FIRST???? I mean Hello!!!

Tracy & Michael
My Daughter has used pampers for 8 1/2 months. I have had no problem but just a few weeks ago we changed to size 3 diapers and they only had the new max dry brand. She has had one diaper rash before and I feel that that was from being in the AZ hot weather and swimming. With cream it cleared in a few days. After using the newdry max diaper and she got a rash. I couldn’t figure out what the problem was, I was not using different soap to bath her, her diet was the same. I thought I was not changing her enough so I changed her more. I put cream on every time I changed her. When this did not help I was trying to think of what I did change. The only change was the new drymax diaper size 3. After a few weeks of this and using special cream. I decided to switch diapers and the rash cleared up in a few days. I know that pampers says that this is not a problem but why all of a sudden did this happen.

Amber
My daughter has experienced burns and blisters from out of nowhere on 3 seperate occasions that left her private area covered in raw red skin and up to dime size blisters! We have taken her to the doctor who provided creams. My daughter has screamed and cried and covers her private areas when you go to change them because she is literally BURNED! After I began reading what other parents had written I was shocked to hear that it was exactly what my daughter had been going through. As a mother, i feel horrible that the very thing causing her such pain was something I was putting on her. I have thrown out all my pampers and am switching to another brand. I have also lodged my complaint with the consumer product site. The company needs to take responsibility for the harm and pain they have caused these babies. I for one, am LIVID!

Jennifer
There is no doubt in my mind its the diapers! I too just thought it was a normal diaper rash when it wasnt getting better. My daugther would fight me inchanging her because it hurt ( she never was like that). Then it turned into blisters! I bought luvs and in 12 hours its already better! P & G need to step up to the plate and take responsiblity! Or maybe those who make the decisions at P & G should wear the diapers for awhlie to see if it hurts them! Wont buy them ever again!

Tana
I just bought two packages of Cruisers this morning but will take them back. I thought the rash she has been fighting on and off was from a virus. I had to buy Huggies because the commissary was out of her size and the rash did go away.

Gina
My twin girls BOTH got rashes from these diapers. One of them was bleeding and screaming for days. We tried all kinds of diaper rash cream and then I finally switched diapers to Huggies and then it cleared up. I am so upset by this! We have used Pampers since birth.

melissa
My daughter has NEVER had diaper rash. She has bloody, blistering rash on her inner thigh after wearing these twice. And Pampers hung up on me when I just called them. That seems suspect if not insulting/bordering on infuriating. I just want to know what I can do to help my daughter.

Nicole
We most definitely have a correlation with the pampers dry max and a diaper rash worse than I have ever seen. I can’t believe P & G would let this continue like this. I will keep the integrity of this company in mind in my future purchases of all the products they make, not just diapers.

Catrina
I have used Luvs diapers with both of my kids. I am a loyal consumer of Luvs, because they work better than every other brand I’ve tried. They are cheap, do not leak and my kids have never had diaper rash with them. I recommend them to anyone looking for a different brand to try.

Ann
I’m also convinced that my one-year-old daughter has gotten a reaction that looks like a burn from these DryMax diapers… on the waistband, leg bands, and pressure points from when she’s sitting…

liz
My son is 8 weeks old and we have been using swaddlers with drymax aince we brought him home from the hospital and havent had a single caase of diapers rash, moms change your babies diapers!!!! babys get a rash when they arent changed enough. also pampers makes swaddlers sensitive so give those a try… if these diapers were dangerous they wouldnt be on the market.

Kelli
I also have been using pampers on my little one since she was born, she is 6months old now. We haven’ t had any problems with pampers until now, as well. Since they have been using the dry max in their products my daughter has developed these small blisters all over her bottom and genitals and the area below her belly button. I think it is a real shame that a huge company that provides a necessary product for many families all over the world would sit back and ignore all of these claims and continue to let people use their products as if everything is okay. I get it, they are a large company and it is all about money…….how much would it cost to recall all of these diapers compared to how many people are actually affected and have a real problem with the product, but along the way P&G need to step up to the plate and accept responsibility for their errors and to correct the problem or make everyone aware that their might! be a problem with these types of diapers. At least make people aware that there is a small possibility that this could happen with your child and give you the opportunity to make the choice if they really do want to continue to support P&G by buying this product or to switch without wasting all their hard earned money trying to figure out the problem through pricey creams and ointments. Grow up P&G, have you been in the buisness that long you have lost all your sense of your morals and responsibility to your loyal consumer, who actually help you stay rich. Shame on you-by the way I hope you aren’t making the same mistake all of us are by putting your children in pampers. You probably know better and are using cloth or huggies or some other unnamed diaper.

Amanda
i have always used pampers on my little boy (10 months) & he has never had anything more than a little red bottom at times. Out of nowhere (shortly after we started using the new pampers with drymax) he got a severe rash on his genitals. It started out red & quickly turned into blisters & bad red bumps. After 3 weeks and 3 doctors visits and hearing so much about the pampers, I truly believe the Pampers with drymax is the cause!!!!!!! We have switched to huggies & already see an improvement!!!!

Natasha
We were loyal to Pampers for our three kids until our daughter broke out in a diaper rash that caused her severe pain and itching. A few days later her brother had the same rash all from the dri-max pampers. Two antibiotics later and huggies diapers they are on the mend. I will never spend another dime on pampers.

angela
I have been using the pampers dry max for a month now and I have had no problem with rashes.

Jessie
my daughter has always used strictly pampers and in the last two months she has had a horrible rash. we have tried changing her diet and formula, wipes, creams, baby wash, and nothing has made it go away. she is 10 months with open sores, blisters and bleeding. i never thought it was the diapers because she has always used pampers.

Troy
My son is 20 days old and I am pissed. 19 days of nice butt wipes and now this. My wife thought “o for sensative babys. I’ll use these ‘pampers’ Given to us at her shower. ONE diaper. God damn, ONE stinking diaper and my sons ass is bleeding. This morning I changed him and allmost crapped. Cant believe it. Grandmother called me at 9:30 this morning to tell me about the problem she heard on the news. A day late and a dollor short. We are triing sooo hard to keep doing the right thing for him and P&G owes my son pain and suffering.

Kathy
My grandchild is 16 months old and had NEVER had diaper rash until the pampers were changed. He got sores that looked like chemical burns. I changes his diaper every hour and applied ointment and baby powder to keep area dry. Sores persisted. After ruling out everything else, changed brand of disposable diapers and sores healed. It HAD to be the Pampers, no question!

ashley
I have had this with pampers and luvs, I think the sent that is added in to the diaper is making this happen. google fragrance chemical burn.

Tremissa
My sone is 15 months old and has never had a diaper rash until now. He came home from school yesterday and had blisters all over his privates. I called his doctor and they had no idea then my mom came and said it was the Dry Max diapers. I had not seen the news so i googled it and there it was. the exact same rash mother after mother was describing on their children. They need to recall these and quick. My son screamed and shook last night when i changed his diaper. After just one day of use and they want to deny that there is a problem. Now, he screams when i even go near his diaper. How tramatic for a small child. They should do something about this and not just deny and hide in their offices at pampers.

erica
My daughter has had this rash since November and it is now May! She has seen doctors and used creams and taken antibiotics. Nothing has helped!! Now to hear this I am very angry! She has cried and complained of pain. I can only imagine what she is going through!

Tara
My daughter was horribly affected by these diapers. I always used pampers and then as soon as the dry max came out-in unmarked boxes-which i believe is a bait and switch, which is illegal-she broke out in the most horrible rashes ever. The entire diaper area would be red, all the way up the back of the diaper and aorund the legs. It turned into huge blistering sores which broke open and bled. We took her to the doctor and got creams, used countless at home creams, oatmeal baths, everything we could think of. It never got any better. She would wake up in the middle of the night screaming! she would cry for hours straight, and she has always been a very quiet baby. she would finally calm down and then let out a blood-curdling scream, presumably because she urinated again. Finally we switched brands, going to huggies, and the rash eventually started going away. She has no allergies, doesn’t have sensitive skin, never had a problem until these diapers. in fact we cut out everything out except just formula, even though she had been eating solids. Recently i used a pampers diaper because it was the last one i had in my diaper bag and as soon as i changed her i noticed she was red and blistered again. and when you wipe these blisters it gets bad and bleeds. Its been 3 days since I used that diaper and now she still has these blisters, but she is almost entirely cleared up. I can’t believe that a company that prides itself on “putting our children first” as i’ve been told, will listen to these reports and not admit they have a problem. I want to be counted in this. I called p&g before their marked boxes of dry max diapers were even out on shelves. I cannot stand this company for the pain they have put my little girl through and every time i would call i would be offered coupons. this is completely unacceptable for a company to have this many people complaining and switching brands and still say they have no problem

CadensMom
My son also had these burns all over his genitals and bottom. I had no idea what was causing it, I tried everything unsuccessfully. I used the diapers for three weeks, not knowing they were causing him pain. I bought a bag of Huggies just because they were on sale that day and the rash cleared in a matter of two days. It’s downright terrible the suffering these poor babies went through, and for Pampers to call us all liars is just insult to injury!

Jerry & Erica
My wife called me 2 weeks ago and told me of our 8 week old baby girl was getting a diaper rash. 2 days later she told me that the rash had worsen and that it was starting to bleed. I told her to take her to the doctor. The doctor order special creams for the rash, but the rash seemed to get more worse then ever, causing our little girl to scream with pain when ever her diaper was being changed and a new one put on. We have gone through 3 different prescriptions for the rash and to find out that maybe the diapers was causing the problem. I pray that the diapers did not do this to a baby and that something else is wrong. But how can you sell a product to someone and the product causes serious burns and rash that bleed.

Taya
My son had been using papmers cursers since he was born. But recently we got a new pack of diapers and within 2 days of using them I noticed a rash. Like any other mother I thought ointment would get rid of it in a day ot 2, but no matter how much ointment I use the rash keeps getting worse. He screams and cries every time I change his diaper. After reading the reports and comments by the vice president of the company, and the reports by mothers I can’t believe they are taking no fault. To any mother out there no company wants to admit fault in their product. STOP USING PAMPERS SWITCH TO HUGGIES THE RASH WILL GO AWAY IN A MATTER OF DAYS. Dont let the child hurt any longer it is the diaper.

"Papa Joe" – Grandfather
If babies are suffering the consequences for things over which they have no control, that is just plain wrong! If people have been having problems with these diapers, more work should be done to evaluate the product. This seems to be very irresponsible behavior on the part of Proctor & Gamble.

Krystal
Why is it on the market then ??? my neices have severe rashes or burns so whats going to happen if people still buy pampers and its your fault for not taking it off the market

Cori
We have been using these new pampers on our newbord since he was born. After he was 2 weeks old, his diaper rash was so severe that when I called the pediatrician about it I had to bring him to an emergency after hour visit that night.

Victor
my son has broken out with a severe rash very itchy… thighs stomach and chest. same time when i purchased new pampers dry max. went to doctors twice in 1 week.. has anyone else had a problem?

Lesley
My daughter has had one diaper rash when she was born for a couple of days and she has been fine for the past nine months. The first diaper rash was because she was sensitive to a cream that I was using. I switched her to the newdry max diaper and she got a rash. I couldn’t figure out what the problem was, I was not using different soap to bath her, her diet was the same, was using vasaline as always. The only change was the new drymax diaper. After two weeks of this and using prescription from the doctor it didn’t clear up. I decided to switch to the huggies organic diapers and the rash cleared up in three days. I know that papers says that this is not a factor but I have to say it’s a pretty big coincidence.

DONIELL
I DONT CARE WHAT PROCTOR AND GAMBLE HAVE TO SAY, IT IS THE DIAPER. MY SON WAS GETTING AN AWFUL RASH ON HIS BOTTOM AND THIGHS. I USED PAMPERS CRUISERS SIZE 5. I COULD NOT GET RID OF THE RASH FOR THE LIFE OF ME WITH ANY OINTMENT. I SWITCH HIS DIAPERS TO HUGGIES PULL UPS AND IN A FEW DAYS HE NO LONGER HAD A RASH, JUST LITTLE SCABS WHERE HE HAD SCRATCHED THE HECK OUTTA THE LITTLE PAINFUL BUMPS. I CHAGED NOTHING ELSE BUT THE DIAPERS, SO I KNOW FOR SURE IT WAS THE DIAPER!

Nataliya
The Cruisers Dry Max caused sever diaper rash on the diaper area of my son. At one spot it started to blister. I have been using the Pampers brand for a year, and it never happened that bad before. So, I was terrified about the bad rash my son has. I changed to a different brand, and the rash started to go away next day.

Stephanie
BOTH of my daughters are using these diapers and have rashes. I kept thinking it was a tummy virus because they also have loose bowls, but its not — they get better with diet changes but the rashes continue. Both have sever red rashes and blisters. I AM CHANGING THEM IMMEDIATELY! We have always used Pampers Cruisers exclusively. however today I will switch them to anther brand – hopefully it will clear up. My poor babies — they hurt so badly and cry so much when I change their diapers.

Emily
Cloth, cloth, cloth. That is all I have to say. My son had horrible diaper rash before he was large enough to fit into his FuzziBunz cloth diapers, and just SWITCHING him to cloth diapers, without any cream or other treatment, cured his diaper rash. People need to stop relying upon chemicals and revert back to what has worked for time immemoria – cloth.

Sally
2 complaints for every million diapers sold? Perhaps that is because parents dealing with this horrible rash aren’t aware of the cause, and odn’t know to complain to P&G. Well, now that I know, I WANT TO BE COUNTED! My son has been bleeding, oozing, crying, screamming for 3 weeks with a rash. We removed items from his diet, removed items from my diet (he still breastfeeds), tried different wipes, bought pediatrician-suggested pricey cream, soaked and rinsed his rear daily, and after all that, only managed to change the open bleeding wounds to open oozing wounds. The idea that “a small group of parents” are complaining because “they are mad about changes” is ridiculous. I have been a loyal user and recommender of Pampers for 14 months. If they made a positive change, that would not annoy me to the point of making something like this up. What is really despicable, however, is that with P&G downplaying the truth, parents who are dealing with this rash may not hear about the possible solution of changing diaper brand and therefore their children will continue to have this pain unneccesarily. P&G, ignore what your PR and lawyers tell you, and do the right thing. Tell parents using your current diapers to stop!
