A class action lawsuit has been filed against Mielle Hair Oil manufacturers, alleging that the companies’ products do not work as intended and in some instances may actually cause customers’ hair to fall out.

Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Strengthening Hair Oil is marketed as a cosmetic product that is beneficial for hair growth, by strengthening hair strands and nourishing the scalp. However, a Massachusetts woman claims that the manufacturers knew or should have known that ingredients in Mielle Hair Oil causes hair loss for some users, yet failed to adequately disclose the risk.

In a complaint (PDF) filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on November 21, Georgina Gomes seeks damages from Mielle Organics and Procter & Gamble on behalf of herself and other individuals who purchased the products, indicating that no consumers would have agreed to pay any amount of money for the hair oil if they knew its ingredients may cause their hair to fall out.

Gomes claims that she bought Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Strengthening Hair Oil in her home state of Massachusetts for personal use, and that she trusted the products’ marketing, which claimed that the product was designed to strengthen users’ hair.

However, after using the product, Gomes discovered that Mielle Hair Oil did not in fact strengthen her hair and actually caused her hair to fall out.

“Defendants knew or should have known that the Product contained ingredients that would cause hair loss or carried a risk that the Product would cause hair loss, but continued to manufacture, distribute, and sell it nonetheless,” the complaint states.

Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Strengthening Hair Oil is advertised for daily use, and widely sold in 2 ounce bottles for $10 or less.

Gomes is seeking class action status for herself and others similarly situated who purchased the product, with subclasses for residents of certain states. She is presenting claims of fraud and unjust enrichment, while asking for compensatory, statutory, and punitive damages, as well as restitution, equitable relief and injunctive relief.

I’m in Washington State, so I’m not sure how or if I can join this class action lawsuit, but I’d like to. I started using the Rosemary Mint Scalp and Hair Strengthening oil earlier this year. I began to experience unusual hair texture changes where parts of my hair felt crusty. I ended up with a large matted piece of hair that felt like a dreadlock. I spent hours trying to gently untangle it but the entire clump of hair ended up falling from my scalp and left me with a large bald spot. I immediately went to the dermatologist and was diagnosed with Alopecia. I proceeded to get full bloodwork done and everything came back normal. This all happened before I discovered the controversy of this oil on Reddit and YouTube. After reading the countless testimonies of other people who had similar experiences, I’m convinced this oil had something to do with my hair loss.

I’d like to share a comment about my hair I have very thick hair and I was using that product and a friend of mine I thought I noticed it too A friend of mine said that the front of my head looks like it has been thinning out and now I’m looking back at pictures and I can see that it is sending out and it’s been more brittle and dry and this product was supposed to be a wonderful product as to my sister uses it and she’s been noticing little bald spots all through her head I would like to include myself and she would like to include herself into this lawsuit as well

I was wondering why all of a sudden my hair started to get matt balls firming at the ends of my hair and more then normal was coming out. So it was the oil. I will not be using that oil again. I started using mielle oil over three years ago. My hair was really healthy and retained length well below shoulder length. About two years ago my hair started breaking and the texture changed. There are bald spots in the back and it feel like straw. I have pictures to document. It’s been over a year and my hair is unmanageable. I will not go to a beautician because of this. It has changed everything about my hair. I can barely comb or brush it and it not even shoulder length. There was a change in mielle oil that the hair and scalp couldn’t tolerate and should be removed from stores. Our hair is our crown. But they got greedy for money at the expense of our hair loss.
