GM Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over Transmission Problems That May Cause “Shaking, Jerking” May 22, 2019 Russell Maas Add Your Comments General Motors faces a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of car owners who allege the automobile manufacturer hid information about the risk of problems with vehicle transmissions, which may cause vehicles to jerk, shake, buck or otherwise harshly engage, increasing the risk of accidents. The complaint (PDF) was filed in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware on May 17, alleging the automaker had longstanding knowledge of safety defects related to the Hydra-Matic 8L90 and 8L45 transmission used in more than 16 different vehicle models, yet neglected to issue a safety recall to address the problem. Plaintiffs indicate the transmissions had a design flaw that ultimately renders them defective, and requires replacement much sooner than the anticipated lifespan. See if you qualify for a hair dye cancer lawsuit settlement. Learn More SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATION According to the lawsuit, the transmissions are prone to internal issues which may cause the torque converter and hydraulic systems to experience excess internal friction due to an improper design. Metal shavings may enter and circulate throughout the transmission, escalating repairs on the torque converter and transmission that the consumer would be responsible for paying when the vehicle went out of manufacturer warranty. General Motors is alleged to have known about the transmissions problems, which may cause abnormal wearing, sudden acceleration, delay in downshifts, and difficulty or delay in stopping a vehicle. The Hydra-Matic 8L90 and 8L45 transmission defect is believed to cause the vehicles to lurch forward, cause sudden loss of forward propulsion and significant delays in accelerating, posing safety hazards to drivers, occupants and other vehicles or pedestrians due to the inability for the driver to control the vehicle’s speed, acceleration and deceleration. The complaint indicates General Motor’s efforts to address the issues have been inadequate, despite continuous complaints being received by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and its own internal records. Rather than recalling the vehicles and redesigning the defective components, General Motors has offered insufficient software updates, parts replacements and other minor remedies that have failed to resolve the defects, according to the lawsuit. Plaintiffs warn that consumers with the impacted vehicles will ultimately be responsible for paying hundreds or thousands of dollars to replace the transmission and related components, leaving General Motors “unjustly enriched” at the consumer’s expense. Vehicles installed with the affected transmissions include the 2015 through 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, 2017 through 2019 Chevrolet Colorado, 2015through 2019 Chevrolet Corvette, 2016 through 2019 Chevrolet Camaro, 2015 through 2019 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, 2016 through 2019 Cadillac ATS, ATS-V, CTS, CT6, and CTS-V, 2015 through 2019 GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL, and Yukon Denali XL, and the 2017 through 2019 GMC Canyon. Plaintiffs are seeking class action status so that anyone similarly situated may be compensated for alleged unfair and deceptive practices by General Motors. I’ve replaced trans fluid twice but problem persists. Dealer not helpful in disclosing “known” issues with GM transmissions and providing reasonable solutions. James June 18, 2022 2017 Chevy Silverado I just reached 100,000 miles and transmission has quit! Contacted gm and got absolutely nowhere and was told I was responsible for the repair. 4300$ transmission cost getting repaired now! I want in on the lawsuit. I have a transmission shutter when the car tries to down shift. at 4,971 miles the dealer replaced the torque converter than the problem came back at 11,000 miles and per Chevys bulletin they did a triple flush of the transmission fluid costing $1,000. Apparently, the original fluid was incorrect, and a new type was installed. Why do I have to pay for GM’s fault? Cathy June 1, 2022 2017 Silverado The transmission just dropped. 84,000 miles. The dealership said the torque converter shredded and sent metal all throughout the transmission. New transmission 5.4K Jemi May 26, 2022 I just picked up my 2017 colorado from the maintenance center we use. It took almost 2 weeks to get in the tourqe converter that went out My truck has about 50k mile on it and it started this intermittent shuttering and bumping while driving so I took it in to have it looked at. I am grateful I had purchased an extended warranty and it covered all parts and labor. I had to pay for the diagnostic & fluids which was over $500. Ronnie May 16, 2022 2015 Silverado. My transmission started shuttering Tuesday night. I was gonna take it in to be looked at over the weekend. Friday it completely died. Left me stuck on the side of the road. Frustrating. Jeanea May 11, 2022 2016 gmc 3500hd 48000 miles transmission out. Been at dealers for over one week with no answer if GM will pay to replace transmission. Brian April 25, 2022 2016 Suburban, ODO: 89,503, $5,171.2 for a new transmission to be installed. Transmission shop said this is a common problem and to check for a class action lawsuit. If so, please add my name to the suit. Thanks Dorothy April 17, 2022 Now have Trans pulley problem damage when I got new transmission in 2019 Rick April 15, 2022 In Nov 2016 I bought a new 2017 Chevy Camaro 4 cylinder turbo. A little above 7000 miles had shudder. Davis CHEVROLET of Gainesville Florida, where I purchased the vehicle, told me that there was no problem and sent me away. Shudder happened again. Tried to send me away again. Wife had to leave work for this and take ride with mechanic. Bad torque converter. Flushed it. Still shudder occurred a while later. Changed torque converter. Air conditioner noise. Bad tire dealership tried to get me to pay for at 11000 miles. Car would not go in park. Paid for that. Check engine light came on last week. Car was extremely sluggish. Transmission fluid sensor. Had car towed and cost me 1100 dollars. Car was under 60000 miles and a measly 4 months over 5 year warranty. 3 days later I’m driving and I go to make a left hand turn and same thing happened. Almost no power and high RPMS. Almost got T Boned by a semi truck. All of this happened under 60000 miles and some just a few months after warranty expired. Now GMC of Gainesville called me and said nothing is wrong with it. I almost got into a life changing accident because of this. I have paperwork to prove everything I stated. I wasted ALOT of my time and thousands of dollars because of this. Not to mention the extreme stress I have suffered. Forgot to mention that a while after replacing Torque converter had shake again. Was advised that after Davis replaced it they had put wrong fluid in converter. Had it flushed again. Inferior GM products and dealership negligence is going to cost me more thousands for a new transmission. How do they get away with this? Bianca April 13, 2022 2015 GMC Yukon with 106,000 miles. I’m having exactly the same issues. Car started shuttering, transmission and cooler apparently need to be replaced even though I just replaced the cooler 8 months ago. I definitely want to be involved with this because GMC was willing to do absolutely nothing even though it was faulty parts. Greg April 5, 2022 2016 Silverado transmission completely failed at 101k miles metal shavings throughout. 7k replacement cost Esther March 24, 2022 How do we get in on this? I just had to replace my 2015 Chevy Silverado Transmission with only 31,500 miles on it. $10K! Derrell March 20, 2022 I have a 2017 GMC Sierra Denali 2500 4×4 and it has 91K and my transmission needs to be replaced cause of the torque coverter , the computer/ TECHEM in the transmission along with several other parts internally , speed sensor , MLP switch , pump bushing , case connector , and a TECHEM Flash … I’m PRETTY PISSED !!!!!!!! June March 17, 2022 Just before 100,000 miles my 2014 GMC Sierra started slipping gear from first to second now need new transmission sickening GMC don’t care enough for their customers to help them out with something they knew was an issue! Wesley March 16, 2022 About a brand new 2016 Silverado have for 2 weeks started having problems with the transmission it didn’t want to go so I would have to stop on the gas to get it to move I took it back to the dealership I told him it was probably with the transmission they told me they reprogram that I would have no more problems a month later months later the problems continued so I took it to GMC rivertown They kept it for a month they changed the drive shaft the transmission fluid the transmission fluid the torque load rated they rotated the tires I got the truck back it was worse when I got it back And it was worse the 2nd time So I had to trade the 2016 for a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 which after 13 13000 miles the whole stereo will start to shaken while I was driving itSo I ended up trading it for the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Joshua March 3, 2022 We have a 2015 yukon with transmission issues as well the torque converter started coming apart and and doing the torque shudder. I took it into the shop and it was diagnosed and the transmission needs to be replaced. My brother n law has had the same issue. Matthew February 22, 2022 My 2013 acadia denali does all of this fron shaking and jerking i brought it back to the dealer and they told me there is nothing wrong but i know it keeps shaking and jerking Margaret February 18, 2022 My transmission on my 2015 GMC Terrain has just failed and will cost $5400 to repair. These transmission problems started a year after I bought the vehicle. Then something related to transmission would happen 1 year and a half later for the next years until it has finally crashed. This is relatively a new vehicle and I should not have to be replacing this transmission. Leo January 31, 2022 Purchased 10 GM Vehicles 2 of them failed transmission before tires or breaks. 3rd transmission failed at 112k. Joseph January 29, 2022 I currently have a 2016 tahoe with 113000 miles. I followed all the regular manintance on the vechile. Now due to the torch converter that failed. I have to payl out $7,500 for a rebuilt transmission. This probably will be my last gm product. Leslie January 28, 2022 I have a 2019 4wd yukon slt with 6 speed transmission. Strarted slipping while shifting gears when initially accelerating one day and then stopped. Next day it did it again but in higher gear and wouldn’t catch so pulled over and checked transmission fluid to find it was approaching black in color. Towed it to dealer and was told it had to be totally replaced. Completely ridiculous for a relatively new car which has done nothing more that transport me and my kids from school and work. I hoped it would’ve been minor considering it only happened a few times. Was shocked to find it wasn’t fixable. Esau January 26, 2022 Had to have transmission replaced at 57k miles because torque converter fell apart. Now at 114k miles transmission just stopped going into gear again. Now they want me to pay $6500 for the repair. They MUST know they have a problem and should do a recall. This is rediculous! Edward January 24, 2022 Got rid of the 2012 Silverado early because of a transmission problem. Bought a 2018 new 600 miles over 100,000 miles transmission went out again on this one. Really it’s a bunch of crap that you can’t make a transmission last longer than that. Should be a class action suit against it cover the cost of rebuilding the transmission do it right the first time Fisher January 20, 2022 Total Trans failure at 80K and serviced complete at 40 K /$5000 REPAIR. This is a very bad transmission and a high rate of failure. I serviced and took care of it . Shame on GM for a POS transmission. Should have been under warrant, yes I know 3/60 still a bad transmission. This and EV will be the down fall or GM and other Mfg. Mike January 5, 2022 I just brought a 2017 Silverado 6 speed trans and was looking a other trucks ( should have went with my first mind), because my last truck had the oil consumption issue. But I’ve only owned GM trucks so I went with what I was use to. I haven’t even made the 1st payment on the truck. Now I’m being transmission is out. The dealer won’t cover the cost because of the mileage(132K) But I thought I knew the quality of GM, so a truck with those miles wasn’t a issues. so I thought. But $4200 for a remanufacture one. I see where GM Just lost the #1 place in the US on auto sales. You wonder why. This will be my LAST GM Vehicle. Coleman December 26, 2021 My 2016 Silverado started slipping and shaking with a delay acceleration at 30k miles. I took it to the dealership and they did nothing. Since it was not completed broken at they time they wouldn’t touch it. The transmission totally went out at 60k miles. It broke down while three states away from home, so it’s the inconvenience of having to travel back and forth to pick it up. Got it replaced with the extended warranty but I’ll never buy another GM product. You all really need to do something about theses transmissions from what I have researched. David December 18, 2021 Just brought a 2016 corvette, only 10,000 miles on it. The car stutters and literally vibrates the whole car after it warms up. The dealer says that flushing the tranny should solve it. They want $500 to do that. No guarantee it will work though. Currently fighting them on this issue. Seth December 9, 2021 My 2016 Silverado 6 speed transmission just went out too. I had a 2004 Sierra and drove it for 254,000 miles with no major issues but I have 112,000 now and it is dead in the water. Nothing like spending $5,100 on a new one. Does anyone know if the lawsuit went anywhere? Mark December 1, 2021 Bought my 2018 Silverado 6 spd transmission new in 2018. A week after I had it started shifting hard, shuttering, and downshifting hard when slowing down. I called the dealership and he said that was normal. Well 63,000 miles later it quit. The warranty is 5 years, 60,000 on motor. It still has the original tires on it. Wouldn’t you think the motor and transmission should last longer than a set of tires? Pat November 28, 2021 I have a 2015 chevy spark and received a letter about possible faulty transmission. So far so good. Lori November 26, 2021 I have a 2016 Tahoe LTZ with 118,000 miles. Awaiting full diagnosis but tranny fluid smells burnt. It makes horrible noises when accelerating. This is my 5th or 6th Tahoe/Yukon and I am very disappointed. Not to mention the front shocks I had to replace last year to the tune of $2,200. One of the replacements shocks was also defective and had to have that replaced within a month. With the price of these vehicles GM should stand behind a known issue. Very disappointed. What do I buy next? Jimmie November 24, 2021 I have a 2017 Chevy suburban i bought 2 years ago and now the transmission went out at 78K miles dealership is saying I need to replace the whole transmission is fastest and easy option for over $5000. Also my warranty just ran out at 75k. This is unbelievable for a vehicle thats only 4 years old. Anthony November 13, 2021 I purchased a 2015 chevy silverado a year ago.Everything was fine All of a sudden a vibration started, like your on a rumble strip, and it started shifting up and down. Had to buy a new trans. 5000.00 Went back to dealer, and they would do NOTHING!!! Russell November 9, 2021 Greetings, my name is Russell E Maddock of Waterford, Michigan. I Bought a used 2017 Yukon SLE with 38,000 miles. It now has 40,000 miles. My problem is when I start out real slow, the Yukon is sluggish until I press the throttle down a bit farther then it takes off normally. I have had the Chevy dealership look at it, found nothing wrong. Had my local mechanic use his high tech scan computer, could not find any problems. It is hard when no check engine codes come up. The transmission has had the software updated, trans fluid and filter changed, nothing has helped the sluggishness during slow take off. When engine is cold, it seems to be worse. My strong feeling is the torque converter is in early stages of failing. That is why I am providing this information. Also, on strong acceleration you can feel a slight pulsation. The Yukon has new spark plugs as well as wires. I even replaced the coil packs. Nothing has helped. Beverlee November 4, 2021 I want them to pay the 5k for a replacement! Michelle November 3, 2021 My husbands 2015 Chevy Silverado and my 2016 Chevy tahoe had transmissions going out told by mechanics. Same issues on both vehicles, makes a vibrating noise in rear of vehicle while shifting, and metal shavings in transmission fluid. My 2016 tahoe lost power completely on highway, then mechanic said others in shop for same thing, and transmission going out, could last one day or go for many more miles, hard to tell. I purchased my tahoe 6 months ago for 40K, and had 110K miles. Now 10K later have to pay 4K for each of our cars to fix transmissions. We love GM & hope they will honor their word. Buying a car for my daughter soon, may look elsewhere. Michelle October 27, 2021 2016 Tahoe had transmission problems with 2700 miles now with 97,500 transmission is out. NOT SURE I WILL BUY ANOTHER CHEVY AND IF I DO I WILL DEFINENTLY GET EXTENTED WARRANTY. Mary October 25, 2021 I bought On Oct/12/2020 a 2017 Chevy Silverado LTZ, the transmission just broke down on Oct/23/2021. (A year after) The truck only has 78k miles on it and is out of warranty. I never ever thought Chevy had all this transmission issues going on . Kurt October 24, 2021 Bought a 2015 Chevy Silverado double cab LT 4.3L in August with only 68K miles on the clock. Had a few hard shifting issues. The dealership I bought it from did help with a reprogram of the transmission. But today was driving down the freeway and the transmission gave out at 70 mph. Ricky October 11, 2021 My 2016 chevy Silverado texas edition out of nowhere the RPM starting going up and down, check engine light came on, and it won’t shift out of 1st gear.
