Ford EcoBoost Engine Class Action Lawsuit Alleges Automaker Knew About Defect With Critical Component For Years
Ford Motor Company faces a class action lawsuit over its EcoBoost engines, alleging that the auto manufacturer continued selling vehicles that contained defective belts that it knew were likely to break shortly after the vehicles reached their 60,000 mile warranty period, causing the engines to seize and stop.
The Ford 1.0L EcoBoost engine was marketed as an award-winning, “turbo-charged wonder,” and was included in the 2018 to 2021 Ford EcoSport, 2016 to 2018 Ford Focus and 2016 to 2017 Ford Fiesta vehicles, all of which had suggested retail prices ranging from $16,000 to $20,000.
However, the manufacturer has received a number of warranty claims in recent years, indicating that oil does not circulate properly through the engine, leaving rubber belts sitting in fluid until they snap and cause the engine to instantly stop working, sometimes while the vehicles are travelling at highway speeds.
According to allegations raised in a Ford EcoBoost engine class action lawsuit currently being pursued in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, the defect often occurs just outside of the vehicle’s 60,000 mile powertrain warranty, meaning that owners are left with no means of compensation for cars with engines that no longer work, causing severe financial hardship.

Change Healthcare Data Breach Impacts Millions of Customers
A massive Change Healthcare data breach exposed the names, social security numbers, medical and personal information of potentially 100 million Americans, which have now been released on the dark web. Lawsuits are being pursued to obtain financial compensation.
Learn MoreMarlon Boltin and more than a dozen other Ford owners filed an amended complaint (PDF) in the case on August 23, indicating that Ford should be required to buy back the defective vehicles. The lawsuit not only seeks damages for the named plaintiffs, but also seeks class action status to pursue on behalf of other owners of vehicles with the defective 1.0L EcoBoost engines.
According to the complaint, the faulty belts are a result of Ford not manufacturing them with robust enough materials, leaving the engine’s belts more prone to easily breaking than other engine belts.
Bolton purchased a new Ford EcoSport equipped with a 1.0L EcoBoost engine in 2018. When the engine reached 64,000 miles four years later, the oil pressure light came on while Bolton was driving it. Within ten minutes, the vehicle went into “limp mode,” which is a safety feature that automatically reduces the vehicle’s speed.
Pulling over to the side of the road to avoid an accident, Bolton quickly discovered that the car’s engine had seized up and was no longer able to be started. He wound up paying $2,387 for a new engine. However, that new engine was also a 1.0L EcoBoost engine, which made Bolton apprehensive, given the danger he had already faced while driving one of those defective engines.
“(T)he engines equipped in the Class Vehicles are, as described by one Ford Dealership employee, ‘time bombs’ due to a defect that prevents oil from circulating properly that destroys the engine, leaving consumers with a repair bill that frequently exceeds the value of the vehicle,” Bolton said in the complaint.
Ford Knew About EcoBoost Engine Problems Since 2016
The lawsuit alleges that Ford has known about this issue with its 1.0L EcoBoost engine since at least 2016, but continued selling cars equipped with it.
In a sample recall letter, Ford says that drivers do not need to stop driving any of the affected vehicles, including:
- 2018 to 2021 Ford EcoSport
- 2016 to 2018 Ford Focus
- 2016 to 2017 Ford Fiesta
The company will replace defective or broken parts free of charge. However, replacement parts will not be available until early 2025, leaving drivers with potentially costly bills and sometimes no vehicle to drive until that time.
According to the complaint, company internal communications detail that Ford has known that the 1.0L EcoBoost engine is prone to seizing up since at least 2016, when customers first started complaining about it.
The original class action complaint in this case was filed on June 9, 2023, following a December 2022 recall issued by the company on 2016 to 2018 Ford Focus and Ford EcoSport models.
Ford filed a motion to dismiss the case on grounds that none of those who filed the complaint took advantage of the company’s recall policies, that they were filing the complaint on behalf of affected cars that none of them had bought, and that there is no actual defect to the engine.
The company’s motion to dismiss was partially granted by the presiding judge, U.S. District Judge Gregory B. Williams, on July 8, 2024.
In Judge Williams’ opinion (PDF) on the partial dismissal, he granted Bolton and the other plaintiffs an opportunity to file an amended complaint, particularly addressing his express warranty claims and equitable relief. Bolton responded with the amended complaint on August 23, 2024.

The only problem I have is that car rental coast $2751.00 and Ford only paid $2425.00. I am fighting with them for the $326.00 that I had to pay for the rental.

I was able to drive it until it barely coasted into the dealership the next morning after being terrified I would be stranded on the road with my 2 yr old granddaughter on the way back from Charleston. After they looked over the car, they determined the cause was due to the recall. No fix was available. I had to have a car. They covered the cost of a rental for 5 damn months while I heard nothing. I could only drive a Ford while waiting. I had to pay on my vehicle and ins with no ability to sell or trade. I got it back last week with a "temporary new engine". It is not a fix and no word on the real parts would come in. I was very nervous to drive it. I got about 20 miles down the road, warnings came on and it died. I was lucky to not get in an accident and someone helped push me into safe place. I called Ford, they came and got me and towed my car back. Luckily rental was still at dealership. I got a message that it was my battery and I need to pay 240 to replace it. Well my car hasn't run for 5 months and new motor put in, I am sure the battery could be dead for not running or testing or a light left on but after what I have been through, I don't have 250 to pay, I have to have a car to drive and Ford is shallow and won't just buy my car back or continue to pay for a rental until the actual recall is fixed.

I just sold my 2014 Ford Escape SE with 113,000 miles on it because the rear differential gears were chewed up and needed to be replaced. The cost of replacement was approximately $5500. At 80,000, the transmission failed, and it cost me $3500 ( After negotiating down from $8500!!!) I took the Escape SE to a local transmission shop to get a 2nd opinion and, when I showed up, they had a 2014 Ford Escape up on the lift and 2 in their work queue - all getting their transmissions fixed. The employee said, "Oh, yeah. The 2013,4,5 Escapes are notorious for transmission failures. What happens is their torque converters break down and the metal slurry clogs the transmission fluid ports. Ford knows it." And, as if a faulty transmission and rear differential isn't enough, the 1.6 liter Ecoboost engine leaks coolant into the 2nd and 3rd cylinders. Ford's solution was to replace the coolant reservoir with one that has a sensor to notify when coolant is low. So Ford knows the engine is faulty. I probably spent $200 on coolant due to the leak. Cars have issues all the time. That's to be expected. Manufacturers should stand behind their products if they know there is a defect. In my case, I purchased the 2014 Ford Escape SE brand new. I was willing to pay the new vehicle price because I trusted Ford to provide me with a quality (Quality is supposed to be Job One) vehicle. Normal wear and tear to be expected, however a new transmission at 80k, a rear differential at 110k and a defective engine from the factory is a flagrant breach of that trust!

THIS IS A COVER-UP AS THEY ARE NOT A RECALL SINCE THERE HAS BEEN NO ONE HURT To whom it may concern, August 17, 2024 I bought a 2018 Ford Escape SEL on July 4, 2023, well several months back I noticed that I had to keep adding more coolant and oil. Since the car is always parked inside, you would think you could see something on the floor. Well, I never saw anything. So, on August 8, 2024, I took it to my mechanic who on August 13, 2024, said that I needed a new engine do the following engine codes P0300, P0301-P0304, P0316, P0217, P1285, and/or P1299. After a few moments of silence, my mechanic said “But I might have something that can help you with the repair. I honestly thought well guess he has a payment plan I was sure hoping as I did not have the $5,676.09 and nowhere to get it from plus paying the car notes. That is when he told me at the customer satisfaction program the only issue was it is either 7 years our younger on the car or less the 84,000. My car is 6 years old but has 98537 miles. I thought why not call them and talk to them anyway. Talked with a rep on my 1st call and could tell she was reading the script from start to finish. I asked her why I had not received a letter or even a notice on the Ford Pass App. She told me they sent one round of letters and nothing else and will not send anything else unless it becomes a recall. Well, a recall happens when someone is in danger of being hurt or killed by the product. So, I asked for a supervisor and was told one would call me back within twenty-four business hours. Two days had passed so I called them back and was about to speak to someone who stated they were a supervisor and went through the whole script once again but at the end was told because of the miles on my car I did not qualify, and they are not going to fix my car. I told her Well I did not receive a notice of the defect, and she stated they sent it to I believe she said Avis’s car rental but could be another company. I asked her why when someone buys the car and registers the car on the Ford Pass App I was not notified. I was told very rudely that they sent it to the owners at the time and no one else. So now I have a car sitting at the mechanics that I have a car note and insurance to pay plus pay for a repair that Ford Motor Company is liable for. I need some help with this company as this should have been made very public and they should be honoring all owners.

To buy me time to save money to have the turbo replaced, I have avoided hills, excessive high speeds and I try to drive my vehicle a little as possible, which means I have not been about to get the most out of my vehicle. I finally got the money to get the turbo replaced last year, after finally paying my vehicle off. Only to be told that I now need an additional 2k to have my Cadillac converter replaced as if the trouble is replaced and the old Cadillac Converter goes out, it will void the warranty on the turbo (per Ford). It going to cost me about $5500 to have both replaced. I literally just paid my vehicle off less than a year ago and now have to spend almost the cost of a new vehicle for repairs. This class action lawsuit should apply to all Ford vehicles with a turbo/ ecoboost, regardless of the year. I would like to be added to this lawsuit.

The car coolant was bone dry again , and no visible sign of leaking. Put coolant in and drove it home. Car would not restart, I had it towed to the dealership where I had it diagnosed for 200 out of pocket. It was complete engine failure and quoted 8000 for new engine

A double edged sword. I am currently fighting with Lincoln and indirectly screw you but directly told, your problem, your fix. Add this and notify all Lincoln past and present if the paid for the repairs or traded the car because it was a lemon or a repeated recurring problem. My understanding and common sense, plastic oil pan and metal does not heat at the same temperature causing a problem with the sealing of the gasket and the faulty design of the oil pan.

This situation has cost us. Does someone have answers. We never got the recall. Until the oil light came on and I had them come get it and take it to the dealership and found out then.

Hello! I went to Southwest Ford, here in San Antonio TX, and tried to trade-in my Ford EcoSport ; the Consultant informed me I would have to pay $10,000 down, first, and they would not consider giving me anything for the car because it is on recall! I pray each and every time I get in the car to go where I need to go; never knowing if I will get there safely.

So Mr. Bolton continued to drive the vehicle after the oil pressure light came on and within ten minutes the engine seized? He should have immediately stopped when the oil pressure light came on and avoided the seizure.

JeffSeptember 8, 2024 at 5:22 pm
This happened to me. Oil light came on. Shut it down. Started it later that day and ran for a few minutes before the engine seized. It had 48,000 miles on it but I was the second owner so I had no warranty. It was going to be $5000 to replace the engine. I ended up paying off the $5500 I owed on it taking a big loss. A dealership gave me $1000 for the car with the blown engine.

The diagnosis is called Fuel Pump Failure. Needless to say, the recommendation was to replace the entire Fuel System including injectors. FORD gave me a higher estimate than Dodge, Chevrolet, and Nissan. I could not afford the $18,500 recommended repairs. I spoke to several lifetime mechanics. They recommended that I replace the upper and lower fuel pumps, both fuel filters, and flush the system. I did just that. I used BILLINGS LEY FORD in Lawton, Oklahoma. Again they charged me more than Dodge, Chevrolet, and Nissan. My repair bill is $5300. It has been over 2 months since the repairs were completed and I have NOT been able to pay for the services. And I am 10k miles over The Warranty. Stevie Burris 580.574.9303

I have less then 6200 hundred miles on it and it's been losing power with the temperature gage rising when driving 25 miles or more. When you shut the car off you can feel the heat coming off the car and the fan still runs until the car start to cool down. I've stated having trouble with it the past 6 months. I ha e a younger sister who is a critical care patient and has to go back and forth to the Doctors offices in Parker County which is 35 miles away. The vehicles temputure gage starts to rise half way there and the car loses power and picks back up a little. When I get to my destination it sits and cools down and it's for the first 15 minutes of the drive home and starts over again, so I stop the car and shut it off and when I start it again I pray I get home safely. When I call the dealerships they tell me we have no loaner vehicles, bring us the car and find other transportation. When I ask the dealerships about it and the recalls they tell me parts are not available until early 2025. My vehicle is acting up now and not waiting until I hits 60,000 miles or more. My vehicle is acting just like all these other vehicles that have had or are having problems with the same issues. A car is like your body, when something is wrong with your body you see a Doctor, when your vehicle is not running properly you take it to the dealership when you can get in and they tell you nothing is wrong. Next thing you know your either dead or broke down some where. My warranty on my vehicle runs out on 4/30/2025. My $3,950.00 service warranty runs out on 4/30/2028 so I've been told by Southwestford in Weatherford, Tx. I'm a senior citizen and only drive back and forth to work part time, and to the pharmacy and grocery store in Mineral Wells, Tx. I have to travel to Weatherford for my sister's Doctors appointments at least 2 times a month. I can't even take my new car on vacation if I wanted to as I wouldn't make it very far. I just want my car fixed and one to drive while being fixed.
