Electrolux Washing Machine Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over Mold Problems

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Electrolux, over mold problems with front-loading washing machines, which allegedly results in a smell that can permeate a consumer’s home, as well as potentially spreading mold or mildew onto clothes.

The complaint (PDF) was filed by Reginald Lampkin and Megan Brown in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on February 8, seeking class action status for all consumers who purchased certain front-loading automatic washing machines, which were sold under the brand names Electrolux, Frigidaire and Kenmore.

According to the lawsuit, the manufacturer concealed design defects and knew that the Electrolux washing machines may fail to drain properly, failing to eliminate moisture following washing cycles, and fail to rinse away or remove dirt, detergent, fabric softeners and oils, which lead to the growth of mold and mildew.

The development of mold and mildew in a consumer’s washing machine can lead to a variety of health and safety issues, as well as causing mold on clothes to spread throughout the home. Plaintiff’s also allege that many items have been destroyed due to the insufficient moisture removing cycles, causing specialty items and clothes to be ruined from mold growth. In addition to the safety concerns, the lawsuit alleges the washing machines’ mold growth issues have substantially decreased their value and consumers are owed compensation.

“The mold and mildew problems in the Washing Machines create a geniune nuisance,” according to the Electrolux class action lawsuit. “In addition to being unsightly and noxious, mold and mildew on the inside of a washing machine can damage cloths and other items. Furthermore, the development of mold and mildew in a consumer’s washing machine can lead to a host of health problems, including allergies and complications due to asthma. Needless to say, the mold and mildew problems also substantially decrease the value of these Washing Machines.”

The manufacturer has allegedly refused to correct the problems, instead instructing consumers to wipe the inside steel baskets of their washing machines after each wash cycle and directing them to purchase cleansing agents if they report a problem. Electrolux also tells consumers to leave the washing machine door open after use, which the complaint points out is an unsafe practice, which the manufacturer explicitly warned consumers not do around small children.

Plaintiffs allege that Electrolux has profited, directly and indirectly, by concealing the nature of the defects of the falsely advertised washing machines and has not offered any remedy or solution to prevent mold or mildew growth within the machines.

As a result of the deceptive, unfair, fraudulent, and unlawful conduct alleged, the lawsuit calls for all class members to be compensated with punitive damages and for Electrolux to issue a corrective order to either resolve the issue or replace the machines.

I have had the same problem. Machine is 3 years old and problem started first year in spite of my following directions for cleaning. Bleach does not remove the mold. Want to be added to law suite.

Same issue with the mold in my Electrolux front load washer. I've replaced the rubber around the door opening also but already black and moldy. No way to clean it. It smells, its disgusting. How can I join the lawsuit?

I have an electrolux front loader and recently replaced the rubber gasket and it has already got black mold and slime all inside it and smalls horrible . I have only had my washer for 3 yrs and have had issues with this from the start. Would like to be added to the lawsuit and compensated as well !

What is the status of this lawsuit and is there a list of products or date range of washing machines affected? We've had the same smell from our machine which was produced around 2016 or so (we think).

The persistent mold is maddening… as is the fear of constant exposure to the mold.

The GE washer has added Microban in their front loaders with a vented door to prevent the mold problem. Not many reviews on this yet. I do not want a top loader but neither do I want a front loader that produces mold. Now what?????How can Electrolux not be there for their customers. My entire kitchen is Electrollux appliances. I can’t believe they’re still selling this washer.!

I am so angry that I have to deal with disgusting mold. There is no way to clean it and you are unable to leave the door open as the light stays on. So unfair.

I am highly allergic to mold. I started getting dermatological issues and breathing issues. This washing machine not only spread mold to my clothing, my skin, but also through my house I have documented health issues. From mold, exposure. Period. This machine is only a year old.

Hi, We purchased our Electrolux washer in 2022. After some time the resin gasket is covered in black mold and is not cleanable. We contacted Eltrolux multiple times but their customer service refuses to do anything. We don't feel safe using this machine.

Purchased EFLS627UIW in December, 2021. I have all of the same issues as listed in every comment. I bought an extended warranty and have tried for months to get the rubber gasket replaced. Repeatedly referred to Solutions Electronics in Browns Mills, NJ, Repairman never shows up. Please add me to the class action. Thank you.

My Electrolux front loading washer has mold around the rubber gasket. My twenty year old GE front loading washer has no such problem! Please add me to this class action suit.

I have the Electrolux front load washer # EFLS517STT/IW which I purchased in 2018 but it was rarely used until 2020. Now I cannot get the mold smell out of it. The inside is clean as well as the gasket and I can’t figure out where the smell is coming from. I have ran the “clean” cycle many times. Very frustrating.

Within just a couple of months of our purchase it began developing little black mold spots on the front rubber seal. A black slime rapidly and aggressively spread to the inside surfaces of that seal. No amount of alcohol, ammonia, bleach, mold cleaner or mold prevention works to remove this stuff. However, doing the best I can to attempt to clean the seal really exacerbates my asthma. The smell permeates all our laundry now. Please add me to your lawsuit.

My eyes are burning and I feel sick from trying to clean this washing machine and having to work in the same room with it. Please add me to the suit and contact me - I need help! Extreme Health Hazard - MOLD with Front Loader I truly hate to bring a complaint like this against a reputable company but this is bad. I bought this washer in 2020 - Model EFLS627UIW. I was told to keep the door open after washing and I'd need to run the clean cycle and clean the rim on a regular basis. I keep the door open and clean what I can see and easily get to + run the clean cycles. It's now March of 2023 and the past 6 months or so have been so unbearably AWFUL to just be in my laundry room due to the smell of mold - and my office is set up here so I am in the room every day for hours. I believe I am getting ill from the HORRIBLE black mold that has developed inside the folds and underneath the drum and rubber seal. I have been trying to clean and clean and clean with bleach and it is impossible to remove this stuff fully without removing the entire seal and I bet the drum as well. There is so much gunk and mold underneath the rubber seal and in places I cannot see / get to - my hands are hurting from trying to get in there and clean it. It's next to impossible to remove! We also started noticing that when we run the washing machine, a horrible smell like rotten eggs or sulfur comes out with the water. I have owned 2 other Maytag front loaders since the 1990's and NEVER had a mold smell with them. I am so disgusted by this health hazard of a machine that I now own. I called the customer service to ask if there was something they could do. The woman I spoke to said I could buy a new part and pay to have it installed as it was not covered by warranty. I indiciated I would have to raise this as a complaint and contact the BBB if she didn't resolve it - but that is the policy. The design of this machine was not thought out properly. This seal has black mold that is growing in places that are impossible to reach and not something that a person without service repair knowledge could do. And even if they could, why should you have to? This is a major effort to replace - I just watched the video. I'd have to remove the top, remove hoses, pull off the front of the machine and reinstall the extremely tight spring mechanism plus other things. I already have breathing issues and I don't want it compounded by this. Extremely disappointed and looking for some resolve.

  • MargaretMarch 11, 2023 at 6:55 pm

Please add me to the lawsuit. In addition to the mold in the rubber seal, I have mold in the recirculation hose. I have replaced my seal and the problem just repeats itself. Leaving door open and running clean cycles does not eliminate the issue.

I pulled it forward and scrubbed everything. Then I washed with AFFRESH tablets 6 different times in a row. Spent the whole day trying to get washer cleaned. I think it is detergent and fabric softener build up. The washer did begin to smell like mildew. I always leave the door open when not in use and we have our water heater turned up high. I always have washed the clothes with extra rinse cycle plus one more. I use a very small amount of detergent. I get way too many suds if I use the recommended amount. We have a water softener. Lately, I have felt detergent is still being left in our clothes so I wash with detergent using the soak feature, then wash again with no products on the fast wash cycle. If I still see suds, I keep washing until they’re gone. The towels washed in hot water are the loads I have to rinse repeatedly. They feel like sandpaper now. None of our clothing is soft. So much for energy efficiency and low water use. It’s a bunch of political BS that has turned our high priced appliances into total junk that you toss when you’re tired of the problems because they can’t be fixed. Three new pairs in 18 years. Speed Queen commercial will be my next set.

Mold issues are bad in the washer. Leaving the door open has not keep the mold from developing as we were told. This causes issues with smell on garments, odor in the laundry room which is the direct route to garage and health issues for our family.

We purchased an Electrolux washer and dryer in 2018 and we have had mold from early on. Called the store where we got and they sold is done cleaner it has gone nothing. Our friends had their rubber replaced under warranty we were not so lucky. Would never recommend or purchase this brand again. What is the recourse?

Having the same problem with mold in my Electrolux front loading washing machine. I haver cleaned it, leave the door ajar for air flow, still getting mold. I thought I was upgrading, but I am putting more work into the washer than any other I have ever had.

Like many others severe mold issues with our EFLS627UIwo front loader. My wife is meticulous in cleaning the seal and leaving door open, imagine our surprise when we reached into to upper section of the seal to find a black mass of mold that we cannot remove. Also, the soap dispenser attracts mold. This is a design fault, not lack of cleaning - water slots at bottom are kept clear.

Having the same issues as reported by everyone else. Washing machines were properly taken care of but mold is continuing to accumulate. Purchased 2019-2020.

Glad I search mold issues with Electrolux front load washing machine. I have 3 kids all under 6 six old and I constantly have to clean mold and gray gunk from the rubber. The smell is unbearable and I have followed the instructions of cleaning and use the tablets to clean and for odor but still nothing. I problem continues for years I have had our machine for 4 years and a half.

We have a three year old upright Electrolux washer. I have always cleaned it according to the video instructions. However, I have found massive amounts of mold on the inside of the rubber seal where one would never expect to look or have to clean. This can mot be safe! Please add me to the lawsuit.

We went in to purchase a top loader because of the minor issues with the Neptune. We took the salesman's word, Now we have this washer that we can hardly use and the smell is beyond belief. I have tried everything out there to take care of this issue and nothing has helped at all. I sent a letter to Electrolux in Charlotte, NC in August that I wanted them to send a repair person out to take care of this and replace the boot and anything else that is molded and smells so bad, Of course, no reply. I checked with our Warranty and was told they don't cover this issue. Right now, we feel like "taking it to the dump".

Our washer is just over 3 years old and we started getting the mold build up after 18 months in the rubber seal. The smell is apparent in 3 of our rooms outside of the laundry room, even leaving the door open. We have paid for a service to correct this but doesn't appear that anything can be done. Please add us to the list of dissatisfied customers.

Nonetheless, we strongly dislike the "high-end" Electrolux washer and dryer. Non-stop mold issues with the washer (tub and front gasket), and a gasket on the dryer that won't stay in place and just dangles there. I would love to hear the outcome of this lawsuit...! We'd really like to be compensated for these horrible and expensive products. The support from Electrolux has been atrocious and reminds me of when we had a Jenn-air stove just before they went defunct.

We have a small child and small pets, and cannot leave the door open for safety reasons. Using this machine is creating more safety hazards due to the smell and contents of black mold, some of which is impossible to remove--even with specialized cleaning products. Had I realized the issues created by simply using this machine, I NEVER would have "upgraded" my 15 year old Whirlpool top loader (which I bought used for $150, as it was a far superior product in regards to our health). I feel completely ripped off and have never been so dissatisfied with ANY product of any kind. Kind lawyers, please add us to your list. We still have receipts. PS. We have the matching dryer and it is also a pain in the buttocks. As consumers we all have been duped and have the right to a refund for this mold-prone machine!!!

We also have a black mold issue with our 2 year old electrolux front load washer. The mold started adhering to the rubber , just months after purchase and use. Despite many cleaning attempts, it remains in place. I am concerned about my health with mold spores on my clothing. I am dismayed that electrolux will not remedy the situation.

  • KarranSeptember 6, 2021 at 11:10 pm

I too am an Electrolux front load owner, the mold is awful, I have sprayed, scrubbed and used the cleaning cycle repeatedly. The mold is still there and appears to be gaining on me. My clothes never smell fresh and it is so frustrating. Washers are expensive, Electrolux will not get any of my business in the future and poor poor marks for customer quality and satisfaction.

This is dated in 2017! Is it still active? Will it ever be brought to trial? Has Electrolux settled with some users? We always take the machine through self-cleaning cycles when machine recommends. Have wiped the rubber seal at least monthly with paper towels and 100% bleach. Some cleans off, then reappears almost immediately.

The absolute worst washing machine. No matter what I do or how much I clean it the mold is out of control and it stinks up my house. I can’t believe this product is on the market and being sold. The very idea that I must deep clean my washer, “my washer”, after each use is insane.

Same issue with black mold all along the gasket inside and out - wash machine is about 1 and 1/2 years old. I was able to clean it early on, but now the whole inside is black despite using bleach - I even lined the whole thing with a bleach soaked towel but it comes right back

I always leave the door open& pull the soap dispenser out to dry after every use. Also Demetrius the door and rubber door washer to help prevent mold. But despite this, it smells horrible and that smell transfers to our clothing. It smells like a sour towels or dish cloth after washing. I clean it with 2 c. of white vinegar monthly which doesn’t seem to help much. When I clean it, there is so much sudsing visible through the door glass. We are very careful not to use much soap, so something isn’t right here. We also use the second rinse cycle all the time trying to prevent any soap build up due to nit enough rinse water. And why is there no pump clean Out like other front loaders I have owned? Disgusting odor emits from that when you clean it out, so you know this is happening with this washer too. And no way to clean it. I called and checked.

Has this case been resolved? I am experiencing this problem now with my 2018 Electrolux washing machine. We’ve followed the operating guidelines, and we have mold that cannot be removed. Please add us to the class action law suit. I called Electrolux and was told the gasket is not covered under their warranty because it is considered "cosmetic" and not essential to the functioning of the machine.

I bought a Electrolux front loader washer and dryer in September 2018. There’s mold everywhere. I was like this was a great name brand. I keep following the directions on how to get rid of it but it doesn’t go away. It keeps coming back. I’m on a 1 income household and we don’t have the money to buy a new one. Help please!!!! This wrong and deceptive on so many levels.

We have the same mold issue and only had the washer for less then a year! They said they don't cover mold!! are you kidding, it is black mold and it is everywhere and we followed everything. Please add me to this lawsuit if possible. or tell me where to go! Electrolux made me pay an extra $77 for the part to fix it on my own.

I am having the same issue! Washer is 2 years old and having a severe mold issue. I have ran multiple clean cycles and tried different solutions and nothing has made it better. I ran straight bleach through the washer on a clean cycle and so much dirt and clumps of stuff was sitting in the drum. Absolutely disgusting!!!

I was told two years ago when we bought this Electrolux they had corrected that problem and were the #1 best front end loader washer in the US. I read reviews for weeks prior to this and all were positive. Within 6 months our second washer began growing mold. I had been running clean cycles, bleaching, leaving the tray and front door open between washes and overnight. I was so determined we would keep this one from growing mold. Nothing worked. I've bought every spray, clean tablet around and it doesn't even slow it. Sometimes after a clean cycle an orange like sludge is inside the machine. I now think it's a fungus of some sort. My entire laundry rooms smells of mold. I've begun scrubbing the gasket with baking soda and salt to kill what's on it but it does nothing. I'm pretty sure the entire machine is full of it behind the drum. I hve asthma and am allergic to mold. I often sneeze when opening the machine and have to hold my breath. We have had skin irritations as well and i think it's the machine putting mold on our clothing. On top of all that it hasn't ever cleaned well and often we will go to remove a finished load and it has dry spots where the echo feature didn't allow enough water. It will start to dispense water then stop after a few seconds and go on with washing the clothes mostly dry. It can take 2-3 cycles before I can get it to actually fill with enough water to wet the load. We've adjust load sizes and types with no avail. This newer model has been worse than the first one we had. We are left with buying a new machine, very disappointing.

I also have a HORRIBLE mold problem in the gasket, where the water comes out and inside the drawer area. I can get to some of the mold but still have the moldy smell. In the past few months there are chunks of mold that appear to have washed up from somewhere and have to check my clothes before putting them in the dryer. I am so disgusted I am ready to replace it after only 3 years.

We only bought our Electrolux washing machine in 2019 and the seal started getting mold on it maybe 6 months later. It's now been a year and we are considering just replacing the washing machine. It is so gross now. It will cost $300 - $400 to replace the seal and I expect it will just start accumulating mold again. If there is a lawsuit against newer models then we would like to be a part of it. The design is poor. For whatever reason they have a lip in the seal and the water builds up underneath it so of course there is mold growing on the seal. I don't know why they made them like this. The water cannot drain. You would have to spend a lot of time after each wash drying it with a towel and possibly get a hairdryer in there to completely dry it out. It's just not a functional design. We will never buy this brand again.

The mold remains and is a high health risk to my husband who has a chronic lung issue. Additionally, the dryer has a design flaw in which lint accumulates in the area surrounding the lint trap but cannot be reached. The only way to rid the lint would be to use a screwdriver to clean the area of lint. I view this as a safety issue and fire hazard that the lint is accumulating but cannot be reached. We purchased the appliances anticipating efficient appliances which would last a long time....not just four years! In calling Customer Service I was told I should replace the rubber seal and would be given a 20% discount but no discount on labor. This is unacceptable. I requested to speak with a Supervisor who I was told was unavailable but would authorize a 50% off reduction on parts but nothing on labor. I am very frustrated and the mold issue is a health hazard which needs immediate attention. Please add my name to the list. Last year we had a new repair person- he recognized right away, asked the year it was purchased. Told us that year had been recalled because it was warped! We got no notification, after 600.00 of repairs, none of there certified repair people knew? Calling and got no notice! Wrote a letter to ceo but no response. We bought a Bosch. Everyone should join the suit, this company is terrible!

Yes, I have had the same problems with mold. We have had this Electrox washing machine since 2009. We thought we were getting a state of the art machine. It is nuisance and a health hazard.

We have the Electrolux LuxCare Washing machine and I absolutely HATE this machine. Right from the beginning the ring around it was getting moldy and gross. My entire apartment smells like mildew because of the washing machine and I have to keep the door open at all times so it blocks the hallway. Really awful . I've tried everything to get rid of the smell.

Have the same problem with ours black mold build-up like to be added to this lawsuit we bought our electric lux front load in 2017 clothes smell horribly washer smells horribly what a waste of money

  • LindaDecember 15, 2019 at 12:22 am

Same issues for us. The smell won't go away no matter how many times we clean it and we leave the door open even though it looks bad and is in the way. The door also leaks water on the floor. Please add us to the lawsuit.

  • AliceDecember 5, 2019 at 1:52 am

I also bought an Electrolux front load washer. The door gasket is full of black mold and it makes the laundry smell. I have try to clean it and it does not go away. I have also left the door open to get rid of the odor but nothing seems to work. Please add me to the lawsuit.

Brand new Electrolux and the clothing smells moldy...I won’t even use my comforter after washing it. It is horrible. Less tgN two months old!

Unfortunately I just bought a condo with an Electrolux front load washer. The door gasket is full of black mold and it makes the laundry smell. The door was left open after each load too! Then this machine started leaking from underneath. I had had enough and this Electrolux set was replaced by a top load set. I swallowed the loss. Now I have the same Electrolux night mare in my condo. I would also like to join this law suit. This is real abuse consumer trust.

I purchased my electrolux front load washer 3 yrs ago and have faithfully cleaned and left the door open after every wash. The rubber seal is moldy and impossible to clean and every load of laundry has an odor. No cleaner or cycle in this machine will resolve the mold issue. Please add me to the lawsuit.

On 9/13/2016 we purchased front load washer model EIFLS20QSW for $850 as a main level washer. It was initially very convenient as we didn't have to go down steps since we are elderly. I'd grown up with always having the lid to a washer open so I couldn't understand the issue. Unfortunately I am not able to take apart a machine to clean it (and I shouldn't have to) so we are again going back to the basement to do laundry. I would like to purchase something else but then I would have to deal with getting rid of the Electrolux. Can't sell/donate a 3 year old $850 machine because it is moldy. Hoping Electrolux will realize that there is frustration with their washer and compensate or fix the issue. Add me to class action lawsuit.

We have had our washer for 8 years and we have to take the liquid dispenser out Everytime we use it or it won't drain at all. All of our clothes smell like they live on a frat floor. We are getting new ones today, and I'm so excited. Please add me to the class action suit- so gross

We bought our Electrolux washer/dryer in March 2014 and have had the same issues - we leave the door open, clean it regularly & it continues to smell moldy, especially when done with a load of laundry. We use cleaning tablets recommended by our repair man when you are supposed to run the cleaning cycle. Prior to that we were using bleach for the clean cycle. I wish I purchased a Miele instead.

  • ChristyOctober 27, 2019 at 1:27 am

Our washer has to be completely trashed. Bought it less than 3 years ago and I have tried everything to get the mold out. Nothing works. Super poor quality materials for sure. Going to buy another one tomorrow, for sure not one made by this vendor. Add me to the lawsuit.

We purchased a model home with appliances and never knew about this. Yesterday I found this nasty growing petrifying mold. We leave the door open and it has not helped. We have small children and it's scary leaving it open but we do. My grandson and my daughter are highly allergic to mold and now we know what's been causing them issues.

I would like my name added. My washer always smells like mold. I've tried cleaning it over and over, and it's still horrible. Now it's not draining! Probably due to the mold, gunk and slime buikdup.. I have several small children im worried about.

I found that my clothes started to smell like mildew during the wash cycle and clothing was not getting fresh. I pulled our the drawer (liquid dispenser) and the inside of the plastic drawer was full of slimy orange residue and black mold. The plastic pipe that the water drains into the tube is badly stained and smells like mildew. The plastic housing in the drawer is not tested with the proper antibacterial and mold preventative. After years of use I have to rid my machine due to the health hazard it has created for our family. We’ve had strange rashes and chronic sinus issues. I will be glad to get rid of the washing machine, as it is a biohazard. But I’d feel horrible that the machine will be tossed in a landfill before it’s time simply because a company could not build a product fit for its intended use, to get clothes clean. I believe this should be a violation of the NSF STAMP!!!

Part of the MOLD problem is attributed to the ineffective self-cleaning function and spin / drain cycle that allows left-over water to remain in the tub after the drain cycle is completed. High quality reliability with proven health safety controls would be expected from Electrolux. However, this is a poorly designed machine that exposes my entire family to known serious MOLD related health issues, including chronic sinus problems needing medical attention.

I got really sick from the mold in my clothing. I thought my dryer heating element was out. Nothing I used to clean the mold off the rubber on the washing machine door worked. I had acute bronchitis for over a month. I put my washer and dryer out for the garbage and purchased a top load washer and dryer that I'm very happy with. What a waste of money. Expensive junk.

When we first moved into our current home a few months ago, we had to wash everything from the move and found a weird smell in the clothes and towels. We then inspect every crevices in the washer to see what is causing this problem and we discovered BLACK MOLD. We did like what most of the folks on here did -- ran the clean cycle, baking soda, vinegar, wiping everything inside after each wash, remove the detergent dispenser, and nothing seems to help. We both have allergies and not sure what else to do except for getting rid of these machines. I would like to be added to this class action lawsuit as well. Please let me know how to get added to this list.

I would like to add my name to this Class action law suit. I purchased my Frigidaire (Electrolux) in June of 2013 and have been fighting mold issues. I have left the door open, used cleaning products, Clorox, and tried cleaning the mold out, myself. It still remains and smells. I paid too much for this machine to just throw it out. Please add my name to this suit.

So we are forced to pay 370 dollars expecting the same problem to happen soon afterwards...
