Officials Warn Do Not Use LEHOM Baby Playpens Sold on Amazon Over Entrapment Hazards, Lead Violations

Customers are being instructed to dismantle and destroy the impacted LEHOM playpens to avoid injuries to children.

Federal regulatory officials are warning customers to immediately stop using LEHOM playpens due to multiple safety violations that may increase the risk of child fatalities and exposure to dangerous substances.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the LEHOM Baby Playpens warning on September 26, instructing customers to stop using and destroy all impacted playpens immediately due to design flaws that can increase the risk of child entrapment, suffocation or exposure to lead and phthalates.

Lead exposure is particularly hazardous to young children, posing risks of severe damage to the brain, kidneys and nervous system, which can impair cognitive and physical development.

Phthalates, a group of chemicals often used to make plastics more flexible, can leach out and be ingested, leading to potential hormonal disruptions and developmental issues. Both substances are especially dangerous because they can cause long-term health effects even at low exposure levels.

According to the CPSC warning, the LEHOM playpens are marketed as safe places for children to play and sleep. However, the agency has identified that the LEHOM playpens violate multiple federal safety regulations.

Specifically, the playpens include a basketball hoop accessory that presents a head entrapment hazard. The product also poses a suffocation risk for children who become entrapped beneath the mattress.

The zippers of the LEHOM playpens have also been found to contain lead levels that exceed the federal lead content ban, and the PVC suction cups on the bottom contain phthalate levels that exceed the federal prohibition.

The LEHOM playpens measure approximately 80 inches long, 60 inches wide and 28 inches tall, and were sold with gray fabric with white mesh sides, printed with animal or road designs on the reversible mattress. The playpens also contain a basketball hoop attached to the top rail with multi-colored balls.

The playpens have an affixed label with “RYZ LOGISTICS INC” and model number “BPP-DG” on a tag attached to the top rail. They were sold exclusively at Amazon.com from May 2022 through July 2023 for $103 to $140.

According to the CPSC warning, the importer, RYZ International Trading Limited of Hong Kong, has not agreed to provide a suitable recall remedy for customers.

CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using and dispose of LEHOM baby playpens. To destroy the product, disassemble the fabric cover from the frame and cut the play yard cover, mattress pad and basketball hoop before disposing of the pieces into the trash or recycling.

Parents and caregivers are reminded that the best place for an infant to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet or play yard. Other than a fitted sheet, do not use blankets, pillows, padded crib bumpers or other items in an infant’s sleeping environment.
