Costco Novaform Mattress Recall Follows Hundreds of Mold Reports

Costco and the manufacturers are offering replacement mattresses and say they will pick up and dispose of the recalled mattresses free of charge.

Nearly 50,000 mattresses sold exclusively at Costco are being recalled, following more than 500 consumer complaints of mold.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced an FXI Novaform mattress recall on September 21, warning that the products may have been exposed to water during the manufacturing process. This could allow mold to develop on or in the mattresses, and pose serious health risks for individuals sleeping on the mattresses, especially if they have compromised immune systems, damaged lungs, or an allergy to mold.

If a consumer with a sensitivity or weakened immune system were to inhale mold, they may experience adverse side effects including coughing, wheezing, restricted breathing, and blocked airways and may require medical treatment or hospitalization.

The company has received 541 reports of moldy mattresses. However, no illnesses or injuries have been reported.

The recall affects 48,000 units of Novaform ComfortGrande 14-inch and Novaform DreamAway 8-inch mattresses sold exclusively at Costco in the Pacific Northwest and the San Francisco Bay area. All sizes of the Novaform ComfortGrande mattresses are impacted, including twin, full, queen, king, and California king, as well as DreamAway mattresses of twin and full sizes.

The ComfortGrande 14-inch mattress has a blue base and the DreamAway 8-inch mattress has a gray base, Both also have “Novaform” printed in them in white letters. Only ComfortGrande mattresses with model/item numbers 1413200 through 1413204, and DreamAway mattresses with model numbers 1698562 and 1698564 are included in the recall. The mattresses were manufactured at FXI’s San Bernardino, California facility between January 2, 2023, and April 28, 2023.

The model number is printed on the mattress box and on the attached tags.
