Boar’s Head Deli Meat Linked to Deadly Listeria Outbreak: CDC

A nationwide Boar's Head recall has been issued for more than 200,000 pounds of deli meats, after Maryland health officials discovered listeria contamination in an unopened package of liverwurst.

More than 200,000 pounds of Boar’s Head deli meats are being recalled after federal officials discovered they may be linked to a multistate outbreak of listeria poisoning, which has sickened dozens of people and killed at least two so far.

The U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC) issued a listeria food poisoning warning on July 26, following the Maryland Department of Health’s discovery of Listeria monocytogenes in an unopened sample of liverwurst.

On the same day, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a recall of Boar’s Head Deli Meat. However, officials stated that additional testing is required to determine whether the sample tested by Maryland is linked to the ongoing outbreak.

Listeria monocytogenes infections can cause serious and sometimes fatal food poisoning in young children, frail or elderly people, posing a serious risk for persons with weakened immune systems. However, even healthy individuals can suffer side effects, including short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Among pregnant women, listeria monocytogenes infections can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
