Avalide Recall Issued Due to Risk of Reduced Effectiveness January 17, 2011 Staff Writers Add Your Comments Bristol-Myers Squibb has issued a recall for Avalide, which impacts about 64 million tablets of the blood pressure medicine due to concerns that they may not release enough of one of the active ingredients.  The Avalide recall was announced to wholesalers and healthcare professionals through letters sent out by Bristol-Myers Squibb and has not yet been publicly announced. The recall is taking place due to the risk of reduced effectiveness. Avalide is a combination of hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) and irbesartan, which is sold separately under the brand name of Avapro. Avalide sales brought in $310 million in the first nine months of 2010. See if you qualify for a hair dye cancer lawsuit settlement. Learn More SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATION In July, the FDA launched a safety review of Avapro and similar blood pressure drugs, due to concerns over an increased risk of cancer. A recall of Avalide is being issued because the irbesartan is less soluble than it should be in certain batches. That means that the pill will not dissolve properly in the stomach and the correct amount of irbesartan may not be released from the pill. The same problem led to a recall of 60 million Avalide tablets in September. In neither case have there been any reports of injury or illness due to the defective pills. The recall affects 150/12/5 milligram (mg), 300/12/5 mg, and 300/25 mg doses of Avilade. The affected pills were sold in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico and Argentina. While Bristol attempts to resolve the problem, production of Avalide will be halted. In the interim, the company is offering vouchers to allow patients to be able to purchase Avapro and HCT as separate drugs. The vouchers will allegedly defray the cost of the HCT. On the Avalide and Avapro webpage, a pop-up alert warns that there will be a shortage of Avalide and recommends that physicians prescribe Avapro and HCT. However, it does not mention an Avalide recall. The alert claims that, with the voucher, the two medications will cost a total of about $20 a month. I am 80 years old and have bronical problems, and it helps me at night to breathe better and not be on other meds. If there is something that I am missing about the health risk, please enlighten me. Ruth K February 14, 2011 I’ve been on Avalide 300/25 since it came out (I started out on Avapro 300 and HCTZ 25 because that dosage combination Avalide combination wasn’t available yet in 2001). I haven’t had problems with either and have gone back to the 2-pill substitute for the duration. Malikah February 13, 2011 As many others, my mom went to pick up her Avalide and was told that the medication was recalled, now she has nothing to take until her doctor authorizes a substitute. Bristoll-Myers knows of all the patients that was currently taking the medication…It is totally unacceptable that Bristol-Myers, The pharmacy, nor the doctor reached out to advise my mom or others in this similar situation. This is really scary… that there was a recall for a medication that could be possibly cause problems due to the lack of effectiveness… Freeman February 13, 2011 Im 61 yrs old and a technical professional. I try to take a common sense approach to these things. Yes, as others before me stated, I have been taking Avilide for several years and had a problem in January when I tried to renew my prescription. I was told that there was a recall for the reasons stated above. However, last August I started to have severe pain in both of my upper legs combined with severe shoulder pain, usually worse in the morning but would persist all day. After sitting at my desk sometines the leg pain was unbearable. I thought initially it was pulled pulled muscles from my gym workouts. My Dr. ran a series of tests including RA (rheumatoid arthritus) and fibromyalga. Although the RA test came back negative, he prescribed a steroid to control the pain. I can say that this did help, however these drugs carry their own unique set of problems. It would be great if an unbiased entity( perhaps the FDA) could conduct their own evaluation based upon a statistically significant sample of people who have taken Avilade within the past year with problems vs. those without problems and compare this to the population as a whole who are taking other HB medications. This would eliminate the confusion. Cathy February 12, 2011 My pharmacist was not aware of a recall on 2/10. I can’t be lieve the company did not contact my doctor, my pharacist or myself. Symptoms I’ve been feeling for months now make sense. The leg pains and higher BP now make sense. Needless suffering and they still took my money. I’m ready for a CLASS ACTION. Michael February 12, 2011 My last prescription refill was in Oct. ’10, after the recall announced in Sept. ’10. Why didn’t my doctor of over 10 years tell me of the recall? When I requested a refill this past week, the prescription is being filled with the two active ingredients costing me more $$. THIS IS A SCAM, preying on the public to CONTINUE selling a recalled doctor prescribed drug. So ask yourself…why didn’t the prescribing doctor tell you of the recall MONTHS ago? Why hasn’t the prescription filler communicated the recall? No…..we’ll just fill the request with two products, and let the cards fall where they may. I’m calling BS. T Barber February 12, 2011 No one told me about the Avalide recall. I was surprised when I opened my mail order perscription from CVS Caremark in the mail and saw “AvaPro” and Hychrochlorthiazide and a $30 increase in price! I have been using Avalide since 2005 since it seems to be the only blood pressure medicine that my body can tolerate. I immediately called CVS Caremark and was only told that they could not get a supply of Avalide and that my doctor had authorized the substitution. The first day I took both pills as directed. I kept running to the bathroom every hour and started having pain in my bladder. The second day, I cut the HCT in half and took the Avapro as directed. My head started hurting the second day and my jaw started really hurting the next two days. Then I read that pain in the jaw area can be a symptom of a pending heart attack. This is the fifth day. I woke up this morning without jaw pain and I have decided to not take the Avapro because I read that the FDA has a similiar BP pill under investigation for causing death and possible cancer. Kimberly February 11, 2011 I have been taking Avalide for a number of years. I found out about the recall when I tried to refill my prescription. I was told by the Pharmacist that it was probably just a labeling error because the recall was only at the distributor level. He said it would have been issued at the patient level if there was something dangerous. After reading these comments I am concerned. I have experienced dizziness and headaches, but other medications that I take also have dizziness listed as a possible side effect, so who knows. This is kind of scary, I can’t believe that the pharmaceutical company didn’t let me know about this. Michael February 11, 2011 I too have been taking this medication for a while and thought it was working for me but as I look back, every hospital/ doctor visit my pressure has been high and the Dr. would just say “it’s because your nervous” as long as I feel fine because when I test at home it is in a decent range. However I do experience pain in my legs, breathing pulpatations and at times uncontrollable diahrea.. I hope this is not leading to other things….. jt February 11, 2011 Like others I just found out when I went to the Pharmacy.,. I have not had any side effects on this medication and it has lowered my BP. I was not in ill health prior. No pain, no dizziness… The issue is certain batches. I urge folks not to get on the “lawsuit bandwagon” because in this instance. its a losing proposition. Stop looking for zebra’s and lets keep the cost down. If you were in pain, overweight and a smoker before hand — chances are thats what is contributing to the pain.. not the drug. Read the labels and you will have every side-effect because you are looking for it.. Lets not let these attorney’s continue to increase the cost of good medicine. Ask your physician for a replacement(s) because they are available and should be known by your pharmacist and physician if they are competent. B. Smith February 11, 2011 I have been taken Avalide since 2003 or 2004. Doctor stated that I had an enlarged heart. And needed to keep the fluids off of it. I am worried that my heart has not been properly cared for. Now I have to get another ekg and a complete physical. My new medicine is causing me some dizziness as if I want to faint and I’m not sure this is going to work. Marcia February 11, 2011 Body aches, shoulder pain, Charlie horses have all been bothering me during the last few months, I can relate to most of the above stories. I’ve been on Avalide for about 3 years so did not think of linking my meds to my recent discomfort. But now realize that was the missing link. I also found out about the recall (from a Publix pharmacist) after my mail-away pharmacy left a message on the answering machine saying their supply of Avalide was on backorder and I should try my local pharmacy for a refill; they would be happy to transfer the script to them. Publix informed me of the recall and said I should consult my doctor. I smell a cover-up from the manufacturer, and commend Publix for putting me and my health at the top of their list! Kim February 10, 2011 I have been on Avapro/Avalide ever since it came out. At least 8-10 years and have had NO SIDE EFFECTS WHATSOEVER! I think most of the comments fall into the category of, if it’s been recalled it must be causing all my problems. Most of what I have been reading in the comments are common complications of high blood pressure and obesity, common viruses, muscle strain, fibromyalgia, etc. The reason the medication was recalled was because it was not dissolving correctly so one would not get the full effect of the medication. Come on people, stop blaming a pill for all your problems! sandra February 10, 2011 i have been riding the greenway trail for years and enjoying all the miles that i have added on every year. then in may of 2010 i started experiencing severe shoulder pain. i can tell you that having 4 children never would of touched the pain i am now going through. i saw my doctor yesterday and she never said anything. i found out from my pharmicist tonight that avalide was no longer available. do i hear lawsuit out there? count me in. s0omeone should of notified all avalide users of the first recall . shame on the whole crooked system. Joan February 9, 2011 I have not had any problems with Avalide. My pharmacist called me today to tell me about the recall and is working with my doctor to prescribe something else. Sandra February 9, 2011 I have been experiencing an usual soreness in my stomach and all over my body. I also have been very dizzy here lately. I just found out today they recalled this medication I’ve been on this medication for years now and never felt like I have here in these last couple of months. I wonder if it is starting to take affect. D. Thompson February 9, 2011 Hello, I have been taking Avalide since 2003 ro 2004. I was given the medication by my doctor in Arizona. I came back to Philadelphia,PA in 2005. I started passing out in 2007.( Think) Once in my bathroom at 2:30 AM. 2 Other times in the bathrom. Once in my living room. And once at work . My co-workers thought I had left for a meeting until one of them had to go to the ladies room and found the door lock. (There’s no key) She kept knocking on the door then I woke up on the floor. I’m always tried. And other things were happening. Susan February 8, 2011 I’ve been having tightness in my chest, bad headaches, dizzieness, and even vertical type systems. I called CVS last week to refill my prescription, when I went I picked it up I didn’t look at it until I got home. It was not avalide it was Losartan-HCTZ, I called the pharmacy right away. I spoke with the pharmacist and she told me about the recall on the avalide that it might have not been stronge enough. She also said that my doctor prescibed the Losartan for now. I’ve been taking avalide for some time so I was worried about trying something new. Dave February 8, 2011 I have been a user of Avalide for the past 10 years, and I can safely say that I have not suffered any of the side effects listed. Most of the side effects listed are general side effects that are listed with all drugs. The recall is basically saying that not enough of the medication is getting into your system. This would lead to less side effects! This is a safe drug and I hope they quickly return it back on the market. Mary February 8, 2011 I have tried to get a refill and no one seen to have it , it has been a week as of today and my pharmacy never mention there was a recall as of of yesterday i ask about i t . Did not know there was a recall. so i decided upon myself to check .And now i know. Renee February 8, 2011 Today I was told there was a “shortage” of Avalide by my pharmacist through my dr. office. Had to find another pharmacy for the refill. I questioned the nurse from the dr. office…she didnt know why. Only found out by qooglling the drug… out of curiousity.. Pretty lousy that my pharmacist didnt tell me this in the first place. Secondly, I’ve been on Avalide for 4 years now. Im 54 yo suffering from severe muscle weakness and pain throughout my whole body. I have been questioning my condition for sometime now. Dr. says just to excercise. Cant do that because of the pain! Its very crippling. It dictates my life. NOW after reading all the comments on here, Im seeing thats its possibly from Avalide? I cant believe this! The pain is so bad, I need assistance to get me get out of bed, or a chair and up stairs..etc.. I move and feel like I’m 100 years old…seriously???!!!! Im surprised that so many are having the same issues. Very unsettling to say the least… Good luck to everyone! Bernadette February 8, 2011 I have been taking avalide for well over 5 years. I tired to refill my monthly prescription today but was told by the pharmacist there was a recall on it. I am now very concerned that so many of my health issues may be from the medication. In the last 4 years, I have had Gerd surgery, cancer of the lip, resulting in the lose of my bottom lip, a liver disease, PBC,( my body is rejecting my liver). Also,I hurt all over all the time. Find it very difficult to move around. I am so stiff all over. My neck hurts, my back hurts, etc. I have been having problems with dizziness for over 6 months. I have fallen due to the dizziness. If anyone hears of a law suit please let me know Dawn February 8, 2011 I have been taking Avalide for years, an I have had leg cramps, backaches, dizziness, vomiting. In june of 2010 i found out I had cancer. I just found out today the medicine has been recalled, an walmart pharmacy was still gonna fill my medicine, now how crazy is that. Joe February 7, 2011 I’ve been taking Avalide for three years with no adverse effects up until about two months ago. I started feeling slightly light head on occasion which woul last for about 30 to 40 seconds and the woul d go away. I spoke to my Doctor and told him I thougt that it may be the Avalide, because I started to break them in half and the light headedness seem to go away. I then tried taking the full tablet again and within a couplr of days the symptoms return. I am scheduled for a Nucler stress test in two days. I think it really stinks that my mail order drug company did not notify me of the recall … they only told me that ther was a manfactuers backorder. This I only found out today when i tried to re order my RX. ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY WITH THESE DRUG COMPANIES Ray February 7, 2011 This is frightening as I just saw my cardiologist last week, we talked about my meds and he said continue all of them. I’ve been on Avalide since 2002 and don’t think I’ve experienced any of the side effects, but who knows. If I hadn’t needed a refill from Wal-Mart today I’d never had known. Fran February 7, 2011 I went to the pharmacy on 1-5-11 to get my medicine refilled and did not know there was a recall. I have noticed in the last 3 weeks I have had chest tightness and shoulder pain and my blood pressure was going up more everyday. I had openheart surgery on 10-20-09 so I have been worried about my symptoms. I have taken avilide for several years and never had a problem until my last 30 day supply went to the pharmacy and the lady gave me a list of the lot numbers of the pills that have been recalled and my bottle was one of them that I have taken for the last 30 days I am very upset I know thats where my symptoms were coming from. any news about it let me know harvey February 6, 2011 rodney on jan 31 wrote that the avalide web page had $20 coupon to get the avarpro substitute. i could have overlooked it but there does not appear to be any reference to a coupon or any other discount. this is disappointing that this web site you are on is an attorney’s who should know the importance of trufthful and verifiable details. Luis February 6, 2011 I ‘ve been on avalide for close to 5 yrs. too. I have also expirience the cramping and gastrointestinal issues, other symptoms. I always believed the issues were from other medications. If the FDA was already aware of some of this info. or more, and “launched” safety reviews of the medication Avalide and Avapro….WHY NOT LET DOCTORS KNOW AND PATIENTS ABOUT THE RISKS….THEY ARE PLAYING WITH OUR HEALTH & LIVES!!!!! Al February 6, 2011 I found out that Avalide was recalled from my sister who lives in Florida. She was alerted by her pharmacist. I am disappointed that there has been no notice from our drug companies over the years. This apparently is not the first time that this drug has been recalled. There are other notices when you do research medication. I have had the aching all over feeling now and then myself, and I am concerned that the risks for other illnesses have not been properly added to the side effects. We trust our doctors and the medications that we receive. I hope that we will not suffer due to the carelessness or avarice of this drug company! terry February 4, 2011 i’ve been taking avalide for 7 years and my blood pressure would never stay at a balanced state. and my body always felt in pain. today when my fiance brought my prescription from the rite aid my medicine was changed to benicar hct 20-12.5m.g. now im reading all of this and im wondering if we all have lawsuits!! so if anyone is considering movin towards the thought as well, we can all move as one. Julie February 4, 2011 My husband takes Avalide and we just found out about the recall when we tried to refill his Rx. I’m frustrated that neither his doctor’s office OR pharmacy notified us when they received the recall information. He’s been taking this and no one ever tried to contact us that there is a current recall. Especially if it is not working. He’s had a headache off and on for a couple of weeks-this could be the cause. Bert February 4, 2011 I’ve been taking Avalide 300-25 for 13 years. It was the only high blood pressure medication that has ever worked consistently. I never knew about the 2009 recall or the two recalls in 2010. Two weeks ago I called in a refill request to Walmart Pharmacy. When I went to pick up the pills I was told they were on order & would be in the next day. Two days later I was told they had come in but they had not had time to unpack them. Three days later I was told they were having trouble getting the pills. No one including the Pharmacist, ever mentioned the recall. The only way I found out about the recall was by calling another pharmacy. If there has been 3 recalls in the last 2 years, where has Walmart been getting their supply of pills? My doctor finally changed my prescription to Avapro 300mg & HCT 25mg. Now I take two pills instead of one & pay a lot more. Ken H February 4, 2011 After takining Avalide for seveal years my BP shot up in early Dec. 2010. This caused me to consult my cardiologist and visit my GP several times. When I found Avalide had been recalled and discussed this with my Drs. I was switched to Benicar HCT mid-Jan, 2011. Within 2 weeks my BP became normal.I am concerned that this ineffective Avalide may have had an adverse effect on my heart. At the very least Bristol Myers Sqibb should compensate Avalide users for their medical bills and prescription costs. Tamra February 4, 2011 ..I have been takeing Avalide for many years’ 5+. Was in shock when my Doctors’ office told me they could not refill and why. I have suffered ,still today from many health problems..to find out now ,it may be from my medication. With chest pain to,legs an back..It’s so unfair with the cost of health care today. Now the health care is part of the problem. ? I would like to know why ? Joanie February 4, 2011 i have had severe diarhhea for at least 6 years. thought that it had something to do with my gallbladder surg that i had 7 years ago. Maybe not so. James February 3, 2011 Did any of you folks read WHY Avalide was recalled? It had NOTHING to do with ANY side effects, just that it wasn’t working as well as it should have in releasing one of the ingredients. So all you folks that have significant pains, hernias, suspicion of cancers, difficulty breathing, dizziness, etc. should GET OFF the Internet and GO to your doctor or hospital. Scrolling through the comments here just shows how rumors get blown out of proportion AND scare folks that have even a slight issue with hypochondria. Tracy February 3, 2011 Avalide did work in controling my BP – however, I too have experienced lower back pains. I don’t want to try the Avapro just because it’s a little too close for comfort. I am now waiting on my doctor to give me something else…what a mess. I hope my pressure doesn’t decide to climb during the wait. Susan February 3, 2011 I have been taking Avalide for years and do not think i have experienced symptons. My concern is the damage I have done to my body which have the potential of showing up later. Also my doctor prescribed Losartan Pottasium as a replacement. Has anyone else been prescribed this medication? valerie February 2, 2011 I’ll been on the avalide for a couple of years and I’m worried that may stomach and chest pain maybe because of the irbesartian isn’t working. Jovie February 2, 2011 I’ve been in this medication for almost a month. Tried to get a prescription today, but was told it was in back order. I only found out about this recall when I google this medicine. I called my doctor today, was given a different prescription. I am getting cramps in my left leg, and headaches hopefully this is not the cause of the side effects. Sonya February 2, 2011 I ahve been taking avalide for over 5 years and recently experince varioue episodes of charley hosre (cramp) in my back, staomach and legs. After during some reaserch I found out the this medication will deplete your potassium, which will cause severe cramping. I take potassium supplements daily which have eliminated the cramping. I am disappointed that I have recieved a noitce from anyone that Avalide has been recalled. Be very careful with these pills , yes you can have a cramp in your heart!!!! Dorothy February 2, 2011 I have been Avalide for years; I am and have been for some time experencing body, mussel, chest pains as if someone was sitting on my chest and difficult breathing. While my blood pressure was still not under control. I even ask my doctor why am I taking the medicine if it’s not working. Donna February 1, 2011 My entire body hurts. Now I am wondering if this is what has caused it. Several days I felt like I was so dizzy I would fall. I have also had severe charley horses in different parts of my body. I thought it was from not drinking enough water, but now I am not so sure. The pain was so horrible, I had to stop what I was doing for a whille. I had to get up in the middle of the night and get in hot water many times to stop the pain. I kept telling my husband ” I hope I don’t have a charley horse (cramp) in my heart.” Ora February 1, 2011 I been taking Avalide since 2003, for the last past two years I began to have headaches.Which is something I never have a problem with in my life . I spoke to my family about my head, ears, neck and shoulder hurts yet I WAS TAKEN THE MEDICINE. I beleive this is why I am having these headaches and pains. I just find out about the recall when I spoke to the pharmacy for a refill.I believe the pills were not working which causes me these pains. I also are having a lots of gas and pain in my chest plus stomach. Juanita February 1, 2011 I too have been on this “medication” Avalide which was not effective in bringing down my blood pressure. I have been taking the drug for months and have suffered generalized pain and headaches. I also had an additional medication added to control my BP. I fell into the infamous doughnut hole in December and had to pay full price for my medications then and in January. Now, I find out when I called to refill that Avalide has been recalled. Bristol owes me, how much I don’t know yet. If there is a class action, you can bet I will join. tammie January 31, 2011 I was just informed jan 30 that avalide had been recalled. I went to my local pharmacy to get a refill. I to am suffering rom side affects…. Joe January 31, 2011 I have taken Avalide for over 3 years, and recently have had severe lower back pain over the past 2-3 months. Now I see where the drug has been recalled, and the side effects include back pain. I have also felt terrible suffering with headaches, body aches etc. If anyone has any knowledge of any lawsuits agains the company manufacturing the drug, pass it along. All involved may have serious health conditions. Rodney January 31, 2011 I too found out about this recall and did a little research. It was recalled because it wasnt dissolving correctly. Go to Avalide.com and you can get a voucher to pay only $20 a month for the substitute, Avapro, which is basically Avalide divided into its two effective components. I have been taking Avalide for years and have had no problems….well, only one…having too find out about the recall after my scrip was out. William January 31, 2011 I have been taking Avalide for over a year now for Hypertension. I just recently had surgery for a Hiatel Hernia, now my breathing is not the same wondering if the long term usage of this drug has effected my health in some way. Joann January 31, 2011 I take Avalide and the product was working for me, I found out about the recall when i tried to order more medicine, and was told that there was a recall on the the medicine. So far as I know I have not had any side affects yet.
