3 Million Bissel Steam Cleaners Recalled Following Dozens of Burn Injuries

Bissell has received nearly 200 reports of hot water and steam unexpectedly spraying from the hand-held steam cleaners

Following an alarming number of reports involving problems where consumers were sprayed with scalding hot steam and water, a recall has been isused for millions of Bissell hand-held steam cleaners sold in the U.S. and Canada.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a Bissell Steam Shot recall on July 18, after discovering that design defects may cause the steam cleaners to discharge hot water or steam onto users during heating or use, posing a risk of serious burns to consumers.

To date, Bissell has been notified of 183 instances where hot water or steam has leaked from the product, resulting in 157 cases where users suffered burn injuries.

The recall affects multiple models from the BISSELL Steam Shot Handheld Steam Cleaners series 39N7 and 2994. Each unit is marked with “Steam Shot” or “Power Steamer” on its side, with model numbers located on the product rating label underneath the cleaner. The recalled steam cleaners are available in a variety of colors, including green, pink, blue, orange, white, black, purple, and red.
